A24 have released the first trailer for Trey Edward Shults‘ third directorial feature, “Waves.” The film world premiered recently at the 46th Telluride Film Festival, where early reactions praised Shults’ upcoming family drama. The film stars Kelvin Harrison, Jr. (“Luce”), Lucas Hedges (“Boy Erased”), Taylor Russell (“Lost in Space”), Alexa Demie (“Mid90s”), with Renée Elise Goldsberry (“Altered Carbon”) and Golden Globe winner Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”).
The official synopsis from A24:
Set against the vibrant landscape of South Florida, and featuring an astonishing ensemble of award-winning actors and breakouts alike, Waves traces the epic emotional journey of a suburban African-American family—led by a well-intentioned but domineering father—as they navigate love, forgiveness and coming together in the aftermath of a loss. From acclaimed director Trey Edward Shults, Waves is a heartrending story about the universal capacity for compassion and growth even in the darkest of times.
Shults writes and directs the film, like his previous features. A24 have produced and distributed both of Shults’ other projects, his debut with 2015’s “Krisha,” and his sophomore effort in 2017’s “It Comes At Night,” The latter also stars Harrison Jr., who can be seen in Julius Onah’s Sundance-premiering drama “Luce.” Harrison Jr. looks to be an actor on the rise with these two roles.
The buzz out of Telluride will certainly help catapult the film into the fall discussion as A24 roll out other remaining features such as Peter Strickland’s “In Fabric,” Robert Eggers’ “The Lighthouse” and the Safdie brothers’ “Uncut Gems.”
“Waves” is produced and distributed by A24. It will release in theaters November 1. It will also screen at Toronto International Film Festival September 10.
