Bleeker Street have released a first look clip for “Ordinary Love,” directed by Lisa Barros D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn. The film stars Academy Award nominee Lesley Manville (“Phantom Thread”) and Liam Neeson (“Widows”).
The official synopsis reads:
Joan and Tom (Academy Award® nominee Lesley Manville and Liam Neeson) have been married for many years. An everyday couple with a remarkable love, there is an ease to their relationship which only comes from spending a lifetime together. When Joan is diagnosed with breast cancer, the course of her treatment shines a light on their enduring devotion, as they must find the humor and grace to survive a year of adversity.
Barros D’Sa and Leyburn direct the film with a script by Owen McCafferty, a playwright who debuts with his first feature film project in this quiet drama about relationships enduring sickness. Manville, who plays the cancer-struck of the pair, was nominated for an Oscar for her supporting performance opposite Daniel Day Lewis in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “Phantom Thread.” She has been seen in the series “Mum” and the films “Another Year,” “Maleficent” and “Mr. Turner.” Neeson is an Academy Award nominee, recognized best for his lead role in 1994’s “Schindler’s List,” as well as the “Taken” films, “The Grey” and “The Commuter.”
“Ordinary Love” premiered at Toronto International Film Festival Monday. For The Hollywood Reporter, Leslie Felperin reviews the film out of TIFF:
In the sensitive hands of married directing team Lisa Barros D’Sa and Glenn Lyburn, Ordinary Love becomes a scroll of minutely observed, almost uneventful scenes, filled with the nervous chatter of coping, that almost imperceptibly build up the pressure until the pain becomes almost too much to bear.
A proper emotional wringer that’s never for a second manipulative or sentimental, this should win plaudits, especially for the leads.
