Focus Features have released the first trailer for Todd Haynes‘ “Dark Waters,” a drama starring Mark Ruffalo (“Avengers: Endgame”), Anne Hathaway (“Ocean’s 8”) and Tim Robbins (The Shawshank Redemption”). Ruffalo shared the trailer via his Twitter account, saying “This one is special to me. It’s the story of a real-life hero. And some heroes have their strength on the inside.”
A lawyer (Ruffalo) discovers a huge secret that may be the root of what’s killing livestock and citizens of unexplained deaths in the community. The trailer finds him piecing the coincidences and fighting to unveil the truth. The cast also includes Bill Camp, Victor Garber, Mare Winningham, William Jackson Harper and Bill Pullman.
Haynes was nominated for an Academy Award for his original screenplay work in 2002’s “Far From Heaven.” He has been nominated twice at the Golden Globes, once for “Far From Heaven”‘s screenplay and also the director of “Carol,” a film that garnered six Oscar nominations, including for Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara. “Dark Waters” is based on real events reported on an article by Nathanial Rich. The screenplay is written with early drafts from Matthew Michael Carnahan and Mario Correa. Haynes’ previous films include “Velvet Goldmine,” “Poison,” and “I’m Not There.”
“Dark Waters” stars Ruffalo in a lead role. Audiences saw Ruffalo this year in Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame” as Bruce Banner, or Professor Hulk. He is a three time Oscar nominee, nominated for his supporting roles in “Spotlight,” “Foxcatcher” and “The Kids Are Alright.” He stars alongside Hathaway, who won her Academy Award for her performance in Tom Hooper’s stage to screen adaptation of “Les Misérables.”
“Dark Waters” is produced by Killer Films and Participant. Focus Features will distribute the film in theaters November 22.
