Weeks after sending Twitter into a meltdown, Sony and Marvel have reached an agreement on the future of Spider-Man’s involvement in the MCU. Variety reports that the studios will team up for the untitled third “Spider-Man” flick, set for release in July 2021.

Tom Holland will reprise his role in a third stand-alone film and also appear in future Avenger movies.

Fans of the MCU panicked last month when news hit that both sides had walked away from negotiations over the web slinger’s future as an Avenger. At that time, many assumed there was no hope and that Sony would take full control of future Spider-Man pictures. This was despite billions of dollars on the line and a source close to the project saying the deal was only stalled and that it was about a producer credit and profit percentages.

It’s unclear for now whether Kevin Feige will retain a producer credit after all, but the architect of the MCU said in a statement:

“I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it. Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”

Amy Pascal will definitely return as a producer, though, and said:

“This is terrific. Peter Parker’s story took a dramatic turn in ‘Far From Home’ and I could not be happier we will all be working together as we see where his journey goes.”

Sony Pictures’ Chief Communications Officer, Robert Lawson, said:

“We have had a great collaboration over the last four years, and our mutual desire to continue was equal to that of the many fans. We are delighted to be moving forward together.”

For those who thought the third film might never come, they can rest assured. After a cliffhanger of an ending in this summer’s “Far From Home,” we will find out exactly how things work out for Peter Parker. As for who he will face, let the rumors and theories begin.

“Spider-Man 3” is scheduled for release on July 16, 2021.
