CHECK OUT: New Featurette Released For Sam Mendes’ WWl Drama ‘1917’

Universal Pictures have released behind-the-scenes footage for Sam Mendes‘ upcoming WWl feature, “1917.” The four-minute clip highlights the extensive labor and planning that contributes to the director’s eighth project. The featurette comes nearly two months since the film’s first trailer was released in August.

At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers, Schofield (Captain Fantastic’s George MacKay) and Blake (Game of Thrones’ Dean-Charles Chapman) are given a seemingly impossible mission. In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers—Blake’s own brother among them.

Mendes is the Oscar-winning director of “American Beauty” from 1999. The film also won for Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Cinematography. Mendes also won the Golden Globe for directing the film. He also won the Golden Globe for directing “Revolutionary Road” in 2009. Mendes’ other directorial work includes “Road to Perdition,” “Jarhead,” “Away We Go,” “Skyfall” and “Spectre.”

“From the very beginning, I felt this movie should be told in real time,” says Mendes in the newly released featurette. For him, the film’s focus is in the journey of its main characters and following them in one continuous course. The featurette explores the many obstacles working against the film and its crew, such as weather and natural lighting. No set is revisited, so the production team are endlessly on their feet and moving to make the finished product appear as effortless as possible.

As shown on Award Circuit’s Oscar predictions, “1917” is expected to make a splash during the awards season. Potential categories for the war drama include production design, cinematography, directing, picture, costume design and original score.

“1917” is produced by Neal Street Productions for DreamWorks Pictures in association with New Republic Pictures.

Universal Pictures is distributing the film, which has a limited release December 25, and a wide release January 10, 2020.
