STX Entertainment have debuted the first trailer for Guy Ritchie‘s new action feature, “The Gentlemen.” Coming off a strong release with Disney’s live-action remake of “Aladdin,” Ritchie now directs and writes his latest action-packed outing.
The cast features Charlie Hunnam (Papillon), Matthew McConaughey (The Beach Bum), Henry Golding (A Simple Favour), Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey), Jeremy Strong (Succession), Eddie Marsan (Ray Donovan), Colin Farrell (Widows), and Hugh Grant (A Very English Scandal).
THE GENTLEMEN follows American expat Mickey Pearson (Matthew McConaughey) who built a highly profitable marijuana empire in London. When word gets out that he’s looking to cash out of the business forever it triggers plots, schemes, bribery and blackmail in an attempt to steal his domain out from under him.
Earlier this year saw the release of Disney’s “Aladdin,” which Ritchie also helmed. The live-action remake of the beloved animated feature garnered huge box office numbers. The film grossed over $355 million domestically and over $1 billion total worldwide.
Ritchie is known to direct fast-paced and stylistic ventures, as shown in his films “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.,” “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword,” starring Hunnam, and “Sherlock Holmes.” Other works from Ritchie include his older films, the Brad Pitt-starring “Snatch” and “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.”
At CinemaCon earlier this year, Hunnam and Golding spoke with IndieWire about Ritchie’s return to aesthetic form:
“When I read the script, it’s sort of vintage Guy Ritchie,” Hunnam said. “I grew up on ‘Snatch’ and ‘Lock, Stock,’ so when he sent me this script and invited me to be a part of it, I just jumped at the chance.” Golding echoed that same sentiment, adding, “He’s got such an iconic way about him, he really sort of created a lot of that sort of genre and camera movement.”
“The Gentlemen” is produced by Miramax and is distributed by STX Entertainment. It releases in theaters January 24, 2020.
