Lionsgate UK have released the international trailer for Armando Iannucci‘s “The Personal History of David Copperfield.” Starring Oscar nominee Dev Patel (“Lion”), the film world premiered at Toronto International Film Festival where it received positive first reactions, with critics calling it a “diverse retelling” and an “utter delight.” It also stars Tilda Swinton, Hugh Laurie, Peter Capaldi, Ben Whishaw, Paul Whitehouse and Gwendoline Christie.
From birth to infancy, from adolescence to adulthood, the good-hearted David Copperfield is surrounded by kindness, wickedness, poverty and wealth, as he meets an array of remarkable characters in Victorian England. As David sets out to be a writer, in his quest for family, friendship, romance and status, the story of his life is the most seductive tale of all.
Iannucci directs his latest with a script written by Simon Blackwell. The two worked on Ianucci’s previous feature, “In the Loop.” One of the director’s biggest bows came with last year’s dark humor satire, “The Death of Stalin,” which was nominated at the BAFTAs for Best British Film and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Patel leads in the titular role of Copperfield, a Charles Dickens-born character from novels. Patel was nominated for an Oscar in 2017 for his lead performance in “Lion.” He has starred in Danny Boyle’s Best Picture-winning “Slumdog Millionaire,” as well as “Hotel Mumbai,” “Chappie” and “The Road Within.”
“The Personal History of David Copperfield” is produced by FilmNation Entertainment. It screened at the BFI London Film Festival for its European premiere October 2 with U.S. distribution and release date to be determined. It releases in UK theaters January 20, 2020.
