Academy Award winner Renée Zellweger will be presented with the American Riviera Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival at Arlington Theatre. As reported by Variety, Zellweger will be accepting the honor, an award given to past recipients including Jeff Bridges, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Mark Ruffalo, Patricia Arquette and more.
“Ms. Zellweger has always displayed a deep commitment and discipline in her performances which has always made me root for her and admire her deeply. In Judy, she adds a ferocity that solidifies her as one of the greatest actors of her time,” said Santa Barbara International Film Festival Executive Director, Roger Durling.
Zellweger has won the Academy Award for her supporting role in 2003’s “Cold Mountain.” She has also been nominated at the Oscars for her leading roles in “Bridget Jones’ Diary” and Rob Marshall’s Best Picture-winning, “Chicago.”
Zellweger portrays the legendary Judy Garland in Rupert Goold’s “Judy.” The biographical drama follows Garland in the year of 1968 when she embarked on a five-week sold-out tour in London. Garland is regarded as an iconic American actress, singer, and dancer. Garland was nominated for an Oscar for her roles in 1954’s “A Star is Born” and in 1961’s “Judgment at Nuremberg.” “Judy” also stars Jessie Buckley, Finn Wittrock, Gemma-Leah Devereux and Rufus Sewell.
Goold’s film about Garland world premiered at this year’s Telluride Film Festival where audiences raved about Zellweger’s powerful performance. Award Circuit’s Mark Johnson called it Zellweger’s “career-defining performance,” in his review from the Telluride mountains. Roadside Attraction’s “Judy” is currently playing in theaters. If reviews alone could project the film’s Oscars potential, Zellweger may be on the table for Best Actress.
The 35th edition of the Santa Barbara International Film Festival will take place from January 15-25.
