What’s On TV? – Sunday (10/13/2019) – HBO Season Finales and Classic American Comedies

This Sunday night sees the finales of two popular HBO series, Succession,” and The Righteous Gemstones.” Never fear, though — both have been renewed for an additional season. There are also a number of excellent film choices on television, so tonight may be the night to settle in and catch a movie.

PICK OF THE DAY:

“Succession” (HBO) at 9:00 PM EDT

The final episode of the triumphant second season of “Succession” is at hand. The HBO series has been in top form, finding a devoted audience and garnering critical praise over the past few months. In late August, it was announced that the show will be returning for a third season. So this finale feels celebratory — for everyone except the Roy family, who are embroiled in a company-wide sexual abuse scandal and are on the brink of losing their business. But knowing those crafty Roys, they’ll somehow find a way to slither out of this one.

WHAT’S ENDING?:

“The Righteous Gemstones” (HBO) at 10:10 PM EDT

“The Righteous Gemstones” will be ending its first season this evening, capping off a generally positive if not revelatory opening series of episodes. The show about everyone’s favorite morally compromised televangelists is the perfect HBO double feature alongside “Succession,” and we’ll be excited to see where the Gemstones take us when the show returns for its second season next year.

MOVIES ON TV:

“School of Rock” (Sho2e) at 9:00 PM EDT

Frankly, there’s not enough space to discuss why “School of Rock” is one of the great American comedies of the 21st century. But simply, Jack Black puts in one of his most charming and likable performances here as a burnout wannabe rock star who cons/inspires a group of prep school kids to start their own band. And when “School of Rock” is on TV, you just watch it. Those are the rules.

“The Parent Trap” (Nickelodeon) at 8:00 PM EDT

Summer camp vibes. Classic pranks. The morally dubious practice of separating twins and allowing them to have no contact with their sibling or other parent. What’s not to love about “The Parent Trap?” Come for Lindsay Lohan in what is arguably one of the greatest ever child performances, stay for Meredith Blake, who is intended to be the villain of the piece but is an absolute icon and perhaps one of the only characters that actually makes sense.
