What’s On TV? – Monday 11/11/19 – Tonight’s Got All the Drama

Tonight’s lineup is grounded in the realities and complexities of humanity. From urban dramas (“Hustle & Flow,” “Live PD,” “All Eyez On Me” or “Love and Hip Hop Hollywood”) to war dramas (“Dirty Dozen” and “The Reader”) or crime and rescue dramas (“9-1-1,”“Street Outlaws” or “Prodigal Son”). Or maybe you want to unwind from the drudgery of Monday with something a little lighter like “Dancing With the Stars,” “The Voice,” or a Christmas romance (“Reunited at Christmas” or “A Sweet Christmas Romance”), tonight’s got that too!

Pick of the Day:

“9-1-1” (Fox) at 8:00 p.m. ET

Season 3 of Fox’s hit rescue drama has been filled with emergencies to keep viewers glued to their screens and coming back for more. Tonight’s episode is no exception, with skating mishaps, self-driving car accidents and rogue robots. There’s even some fight-club action and relationship drama in the lives of our favorite first responders.

Movies on TV:

“Hustle & Flow” (BET) 6:00 PM ET

This 2005 award-winning film about a Memphis pimp going through a mid-life crisis while trying to become a successful hip-hop artist. Featuring raw, intense, standout performances from Terrence Howard, Taryn Manning, Taraji P. Henson and Paula Jai Parker amongst others, this film is truly an underdog story. While not for everyone, it is definitely a realistic and honest portrayal of a subset of modern urban life that’s definitely worth a look.

“William Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo + Juliet'” (Encore) 6:57 p.m. ET

One of the most adapted works, Baz Luhrmann‘s version of William Shakespeare’s “Romeo + Juliet” is one of the best, definitely more suited for modern generations while keeping the original dialogue. Featuring memorable performances by Leonardo DiCaprio, Claire Danes, John Leguizamo and Harold Perrineau, this captivating film is also peppered with lots of familiar faces. With a soundtrack to remember, this modernization of a theatrical classic is beautifully shot, well-acted and just an overall brilliantly done piece of art.

“The Reader” (TMC) 10:00 PM ET

Kate Winslet, Ralph Fiennes and David Kross are superb in this 2008 drama in which a young man has an affair with a much older woman in post-WWII Germany only to find out years later about her controversial past. This award-winning film makes viewers question their own morality and the complexities of human nature. Filled with quietly intense scenes and touching moments along with more challenging and complex situations and dialogue, this is a complex and compelling drama for a Monday night.
