After the first trailer for “Sonic the Hedgehog” was received poorly, Paramount Pictures have unveiled a new character design in its official trailer released Tuesday.

Based on the global blockbuster videogame franchise from Sega, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG tells the story of the world’s speediest hedgehog as he embraces his new home on Earth. In this live-action adventure comedy, Sonic and his new best friend Tom (James Marsden) team up to defend the planet from the evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and his plans for world domination. The family-friendly film also stars Tika Sumpter and Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic.

Comedian Jim Carrey stars as Dr. Robotnik, a villain out to foil Sonic’s efforts; an archenemy in the gaming series. Ben Schwartz lends his voice to the central role of Sonic. The film’s cast includes Carrey, Schwartz, James Marsden, Neal McDonough and Adam Pally.

The film is directed by Jeff Fowler, who directed the Oscar nominated short “Gopher Broke.” Fowler also worked with the visual effects team for Spike Jonze’s “Where the Wild Things Are.” Blur Studio, co-founded by Tim Miller, is behind the film’s visual effects. The studio recently did the animation on four episodes of Netflix’s “Love, Death & Robots.”

Patrick Casey, Josh Miller and Oren Uziel (“22 Jump Street,” “The Cloverfield Paradox”)) write the script, with a story by Van Robichaux and Evan Susser.   The film’s characters are based on the designs by Hirokazu Yasuhara, who first animated these ideas for the Sega console debut. Programmers Yuji Naka and artist Naoto Ohshima first envisioned the series’ creation as Sega was looking to compete with Nintendo’s Mario.

Fowler, Toby Ascher and Tim Miller (“Deadpool”) are executive producing. Sega and Paramount Pictures produced “Sonic the Hedgehog,” which releases in theaters February 14, 2020.
