Amazon Studios has released the first trailer for Benedict Andrews‘ “Seberg,” starring Kristen Stewart. The film premiered at the 76th Venice Film Festival to lukewarm reviews, highlighting Stewart’s performance in the film as a standout.

The synopsis is as follows:

“Seberg” is inspired by true events about the French New Wave darling and “Breathless” star, Jean Seberg (Stewart), who in the late 1960s was targeted by the FBI because of her support of the civil rights movement and romantic involvement with Hakim Jamal (Anthony Mackie), among others. In Benedict Andrews’ noir-ish thriller, Seberg’s life and career are destroyed by Hoover’s overreaching surveillance and harassment in an effort to suppress and discredit Seberg’s activism.

Stewart is best known recently for her work in “Personal Shopper,” “Lizzie,” and “JT LeRoy.” She can be seen in the “Charlie’s Angels”‘ reboot in theaters this weekend. Stewart also stars in the upcoming deep sea thriller, “Underwater,” due next year. She is directed under Andrews, who helmed “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,” “A Street Car Named Desire” and the Rooney Mara-starring “Una.”

Co-starring with Stewart is Mackie, who is best known as Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He can be seen next month in the AppleTV+ film, “The Banker,” with Samuel L. Jackson. Mackie will also be starring in the Disney+ series, “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” next year.

“Seberg” has made its way in the festival circuit with stops including Toronto, Milan, Zurich, London and Mill Valley. The cast includes Stewart and Mackie as well as Zazie Beetz, Margaret Qualley, Vince Vaughn and Jack O’Connell. Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse penned the script. Oscar-nominated cinematographer Rachel Morrison (“Mudbound“) shoots the film.

“Seberg” is produced by Automatik Entertainment, Phreaker Films and Bradly Pilz Productions.

Amazon Studios will be distributing the biopic in theaters December 13.
