Film Independent have announced the nominees for the 2020 Independent Spirit Awards taking place at the Santa Monica Pier Saturday, February 8, broadcast live on IFC.

Among the nominations, as they were announced by Zazie Beetz and Natasha Lyonne Thursday, is Robert Eggers’ “The Lighthouse” anchoring mentions for Willem Dafoe in supporting performance, cinematography, editing, Eggers for Best Director, and Robert Pattinson in the leading actor category.

Also in the nominees is the Safdie brothers’ “‘Uncut Gems,” which landed in Best Screenplay, editing, and leading man Adam Sandler for Best Male Lead.

Best Documentary features nominations for some of the year’s most talked about doc features, including “American Factory,” “Apollo 11,” “For Sama,” “Honeyland,” and “Island of the Hungry Ghosts.”

The supporting categories found some much talked about performances take the spotlight, such as Taylor Russell in “Waves,” Zhao Shuzhen for Lulu Wang’s “The Farewell,” Jonathon Majors in Joe Talbot’s “The Last Black Man in San Francisco,” and Noah Jupe in Alma Har’el’s moving “Honey Boy.”

Octavia Spencer’s performance in “Luce” has not been forgotten since Sundance, as many would have feared. Also making the cut is Jennifer Lopez’s performance in Lorene Scafaria’s “Hustlers” from STX.

Scafaria is also up for Best Director, a category she shares the space with Alma Har’el, Josh and Benny Safdie, Robert Eggers, and Julius Onah. In the Best Feature category, “A Hidden Life,” “Clemency,” “The Farewell,” “Marriage Story,” and “Uncut Gems”‘ take the stage.

“At a time when the film business is undergoing such change and challenges, it’s important to loudly celebrate the work itself–the films!–and to recognize 2019 as a year of bold, audacious and accomplished filmmaking,” said President of Film Independent Josh Welsh. “That’s what the Spirit Awards are all about.”

The 2020 Indie Spirit Awards nominations have given people a lot to ponder. Some of the year’s best films are included in the mentions and shows just how much support their individual campaigns this awards season can muster.
