Marvel has released the teaser for “Black Widow,” directed by Cate Shortland. The teaser not only sees the first venture into Marvel’s Phase Four, but the return of Scarlett Johansson, who reprises her role as Natasha Romanoff, an early Avenger.
“I’ve lived a lot of lives, but I’m done running from my past,” Natasha says in the trailer. The timeline is just after “Captain America: Civil War” and Natasha is seen making the reach to her past and reuniting with her family, headed by an appearance from Florence Pugh as her sister, Yelena.
Pugh, who joined the superhero’s standalone feature back in March, is seen fighting Johansson’s character upon arrival. It’s clear the two can easily match the other in combat, and there is more to Black Widow’s past that will be discovered after so many MCU films. The cast also stars Rachel Weisz (“The Favourite”) and David Harbour (“Stranger Things”).
Shortland directs the film from a script by Ned Benson and Zac Schaeffer. Her previous works include “Somersault,” “Lore” and “Berlin Syndrome,” which competed in the 2017 Sundance Film Festival World Cinema-Dramatic category.
The last time audiences saw Natasha Romanoff was in Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame.” Now with “Black Widow,” the titular star will get to have her moment. She looks to remedy some unfinished business.
Johansson’s career has taken an interesting development as of late. She stars in Taika Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit” and in Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story,” which took home high honors at the Gotham Awards. To some capacity, the “Black Widow” teaser arrives at a perfect time.
“Black Widow” is produced by Marvel Studios with Kevin Feige and Walt Disney. It releases in theaters domestically May 1, 2020. Watch the teaser and check out the poster below!
