New Republic Pictures Signs Exclusive First Look Production Deal with Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton’s Dirty Films

Los Angeles, CA, June 30, 2020 – New Republic Pictures (NRP), led by Founder Brian Oliver and President Bradley Fischer, has signed Dirty Films to a first-look feature film production deal, it was announced today. 

Dirty Films is an independent film and television production company, founded by Cate Blanchett and Andrew Upton. Dirty Films most recently Executive Produced MRS. AMERICA for FX on Hulu, which premiered to critical acclaim in May 2020. The company also co-created and Executive Produced the limited series STATELESS, which first premiered at the Berlin Film Festival, and following a hugely successful Australian release, will launch globally on July 8th on Netflix. 

Los Angeles-based producer Coco Francini, who Executive Produced “Mrs. America” alongside Blanchett, has joined Dirty Films as a Partner. Francini has been a frequent collaborator of Quentin Tarantino and served as a producer on Tarantino’s THE HATEFUL EIGHT. She also produced Zach Braff’s WISH I WAS THERE and most recently, was an executive at Activision Blizzard Studios. Previously, she was EVP at Stacey Sher’s Shiny Penny.

Blanchett and Fischer previously worked together on THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS and TRUTH. 

“I’ve known Cate and Andrew for almost 10 years now and have had the great privilege of working with Cate on two films.  While it is well-settled that she is among the greatest screen and stage actresses of our time, Cate also happens to have a fierce entrepreneurial vision and instinct for finding, developing, packaging and producing the kind of poignant and transportive film events that are at the heart of what Brian and I are building at New Republic,” said Fischer.  “We are so fortunate to join Cate, Andrew, Coco and the whole team at Dirty Films as they invest their incredible talent and filmmaker relationships into an enviable slate of projects,” added Oliver.  “Brad and I are beyond thrilled to be working with them.”

New Republic Pictures (NRP) is a production and financing company run by veteran producers Brian Oliver and Bradley Fischer dedicated to producing major theatrical motion pictures for wide studio release with budgets up to and above $100M. NRP has more than 20 films and television projects in various stages of production and development. In its first year of operation, NRP co-financed and produced the critically acclaimed Sam Mendes film, 1917 with Amblin Partners and Universal Pictures, and the Dexter Fletcher film, ROCKETMAN, with Paramount Pictures. 1917 won three Academy Awards® as well as two Golden Globes, including the Golden Globe for Best Picture – Drama, seven BAFTAS, including for Best Film, and the Producers Guild of America’s Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Best Theatrical Motion Picture. It has grossed over $368 million worldwide to-date. ROCKETMAN, a biopic of rock icon Elton John, co-financed with Starlings Entertainment and Paramount Pictures, won the Academy Award® for Best Original Song and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical.   

On New Republic’s development slate are FAMILY JEWELS, a multigenerational family comedy starring Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler and Diane Keaton, which Fischer and producer Alan Nevins packaged with the three leads and screenwriter Peter Hoare; UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY, the new Image Comics graphic novel from Scott Snyder and Charles Soule; CHESTER AND GUS, based on the novel by Cammie McGovern and adapted by writer Ben August; urban drama GREEN RUSH, produced with Will Packer (GIRLS NIGHT, STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON); Jennifer Lawrence starrer ZELDA; and sci-fi action-thriller I AM WALTZ, based on the novel and to be directed by David Karlak.


Dirty Films is an independent film and television production company, founded by Andrew Upton and Cate Blanchett. In 2020, LA-based producer Coco Francini joined as a partner. 

Creative Executives Georgie Pym and Georgia Gilbert are based in London and Sydney, respectively. With producers in the US, the UK, and Australia, Dirty Films is an internationally-focused production outfit with a global reach.

Film credits include the TRUTHCAROLLITTLE FISH and THE TURNING, and television credits include FX Networks’ critically acclaimed limited series MRS AMERICA, and limited series STATELESS, which launches globally on Netflix on July 8th.
