With “Hereditary,” director Ari Aster shattered the nerves of audiences and critics everywhere. In addition, the film featured a shattering performance from Toni Collette who earned Best Actress buzz. Plus, it became the highest grossing movie from A24 Films. However, Aster’s debut feature may have been a warm up for “Midsommar,” his upcoming sophomore film. Much like “Hereditary,” A24 Films is behind it and they shared a short teaser video on Twitter.

Despite being a microscopic tease, it’s still brilliantly deceptive. The sun and flower emojis are an evident contrast to the likely horrific nature of the movie. As previously mentioned, the director of “Hereditary” is returning to the horror genre. So, Aster surely has some tricks up his sleeve.

The film stars Florence Pugh and Jack Reynor as the main leads. Also, Will Poulter stars along with Vilhelm Blomgren, William Jackson Harper, Ellora Torchia, and Archie Madakwe.

Here’s an official synopsis from Bloody Disgusting:

“Pugh and Reynor will play a couple that travels to Sweden to visit their friend’s rural hometown for its fabled mid-summer festival. What begins as an idyllic retreat quickly devolves into an increasingly violent and bizarre competition at the hands of a pagan cult.”

The film is described as a “Scandinavian folk horror” film by Aster. Also, it seems like he has a fascination with cults. “Hereditary” was a depiction of Satanism. Now, with his latest film depicting paganism, he may be making his own version of “The Wicker Man.” However, with the synopsis describing the film as super violent, it could be even crazier than the famed 1973 classic. We shall see.

“Midsommar” will be released by A24 Films on Aug. 9, 2019.
