AAFCA Announces Key Dates for 11th Annual Awards Ceremony


The African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) will hold its 11th Annual AAFCA Honors on January 22, 2020 at the Taglyan Multicultural Complex in Hollywood. The news was announced last week by AAFCA President and co-founder, Gil Robertson. The ceremony honors outstanding achievement in film.

Awards will be handed out to winners in the following categories:

  • Best Film
  • Best Director
  • Best Screenplay
  • Best Actor
  • Best Actress
  • Best Supporting Actor
  • Best Supporting Actress
  • Best Breakout Performance
  • Best Animated Film
  • Best Independent Film
  • Best Foreign Film
  • Best Documentary
  • Best Song

AAFCA Award winners will be announced along with AAFCA’s annual “Top 10” list on December 10, 2019, highlighting the top 10 films of the year and the top 10 television programs of the year. Deadline for screenings is December 6, 2019 and the voting deadline is Sunday, December 8, 2019.

Additional honorary awards that will be presented at the 11th Annual AAFCA Awards will be announced later this year including the AAFCA Stanley Kramer Award and the AAFCA Cinema Vanguard Award, which were presented to Quincy Jones and Jason Blum respectively at last year’s event.

In July, the AAFCA announced their 2019 TV Honors, crowning Ava DuVernay’s Netflix series, “When They See Us,” with a total of four wins, leading the honors. Star Jharrel Jerome was named the association’s winner for Breakthrough Performance, while the limited series scored wins for Best Limited Series, Best Ensemble and Best Writing.

The AAFCA was established in 2003 and has continued to be the premiere body of Black film critics in the world, actively reviewing film and television, with a particular emphasis on entertainment that includes the Black experience and storytellers from the African Diaspora. Members of the AAFCA cover a wide spectrum of mediums, a cross-section of journalism including print, TV, radio broadcast and online.
