Academy Idol XII Round 2: Critics Precursors


It’s time to report our results from the first round of Academy Idol XII! Thank you to the thousands who voted. Several of the races were extremely close, including a very tight Group A across the board. However, some movies got eliminated and we have a very interesting pack to move into Round 2. Without further ado, let’s jump into the results.

  • “Black Panther” – Adapted
  • “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” – Adapted
  • “First Man” – Adapted
  • “The Hate U Give” – Adapted
  • “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” – Adapted
  • “Green Book” – Original
  • “Hereditary” – Original
  • “Isle of Dogs” – Original
  • “On the Basis of Sex” – Original
  • “Sorry to Bother You” – Original

The Group A Adapted had the most total votes of any of our groups. Meanwhile, the overall vote leader of the first round came from the Original side. With a good mix of animated movies, blockbusters, and indie films, only four emerged. Our four to come out of Group A are:

  • Black Panther” – Adapted
  • Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” – Adapted
  • Isle of Dogs” – Original


  • Crazy Rich Asians” – Adapted
  • “The Incredibles 2” – Adapted
  • “Mary Poppins Returns” – Adapted
  • “A Star Is Born” – Adapted
  • “Widows” – Adapted
  • “The Favourite” – Original
  • “First Reformed” – Original
  • “A Quiet Place” – Original
  • “Vice” – Original
  • “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” – Original

There was quite a bit of distance between the top tier and bottom tier of these groups. The films to advance felt like they were locks. The four to advance out of Group B are:

  • “A Star Is Born” – Adapted
  • “Widows” – Adapted
  • “The Favourite” – Original* GROUP LEADER
  • “A Quiet Place” – Original

Group C

  • “BlacKkKlansman”- Adapted
  • “If Beale Street Could Talk” – Adapted
  • “Leave No Trace” – Adapted
  • “Paddington 2”- Adapted
  • “Ralph Breaks the Internet” – Adapted
  • “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” – Original
  • “Bohemian Rhapsody” – Original
  • “Eighth Grade” – Original
  • “Roma” – Orignal
  • “Tully” – Original

The single closest race unfolded in Group C. The Original films had a 2nd place finisher and a 3rd place finisher that switched spots on at least four occasions. Ultimately one movie prevailed and found its way into the Round 2 films. With that in mind, let’s look at our Group C movies advancing to the next round:

  • BlacKkKlansman” – Adapted* TIED FOR GROUP LEADER
  • “If Beale Street Could Talk” – Adapted
  • Eighth Grade” – Original
  • Roma” – Original* TIED FOR GROUP LEADER

Staff Pick into Round 2

The final movie to make the cut came down to the runners-up of the groups. Ultimately, the staff struggled with the pick. It was a dead tie even among the writers, but ultimately, a movie from out of this world prevailed. The staff has chosen to push Damien Chazelle’s First Man” into the competition, and it will occupy the 13th spot in the competition.

Critics Precursors 

With that settled, we’ve got our 13 films for Academy Idol XII! Now it’s time to jump into Round 2 voting, and our theme this round will be the Critics Prizes! Look back at which films deserve to move on based on their performance among critics groups. At this point, “Roma” and “The Favourite” have performed exceptionally well when picking up Best Picture prizes. Meanwhile, films like “Hereditary” and “If Beale Street Could Talk” have dominated critics prizes for Actress and Supporting Actress. Ultimately, which Critics prize categories you want to determine your voting strategy is up to you. you get 6 PICKS in this round, so choose wisely.
