ACCA 1990 Nominations Announced: ‘Dances with Wolves’ and ‘Goodfellas’ Lead with 12 Each

Penny Marshall, James Caan, Catherine O’Hara, and Albert Finney are among surprise inclusions…

ACCA 1990 Announcement announced its nominations for the 1990 Awards Circuit Community Awards (ACCA 1990).  The awards are voted on by the Awards Circuit’s community of over 850,000 readers from all over the world.

Co-leading the nomination tally were two Oscar favorites: Kevin Costner’s “Dances with Wolves” and Martin Scorsese’s “Goodfellas” both racked up 12 nominations each including Best Picture nominations. In the top category, a tie resulted in six nominees that also included Tim Burton’s “Edward Scissorhands,” Jerry Zucker’s “Ghost,” Rob Reiner’s “Misery,” and Garry Marshall’s “Pretty Woman.”

Best Picture wasn’t the only tied up category as Best Actress managed six nominees for Kathy Bates (“Misery”), Laura Dern (“Wild at Heart”), Mia Farrow (“Alice”), Anjelica Huston (“The Grifters”), Shirley MacLaine (“Postcards from the Edge”), and Julia Roberts (“Pretty Woman”).

Supporting Actor was truly robust with a seven-way-tie that included three former Oscar citations in Graham Greene (“Dances with Wolves”), Al Pacino (“Dick Tracy”), and Joe Pesci (“Goodfellas”), alongside the newly recognized Robert DeNiro (“Goodfellas”), the late Albert Finney (“Miller’s Crossing”), Daniel Stern (“Home Alone”), and John Turturro (“Miller’s Crossing”).

In the Director category, a lone director was able to make the cut in the form of the late Penny Marshall for her work on “Awakenings,” which also brought in a considerable amount of supporting including a surprise nomination for Julie Kavner in Best Supporting Actress. She’s joined along with Academy holdovers Annette Bening (“The Grifters”), Lorraine Bracco (“Goodfellas”), and Whoopi Goldberg (“Ghost”), and first-time ACCA nominated Catherine O’Hara for her work in “Home Alone.”

There were other surprise inclusions and exclusions from the historic cinema year. The AwardsCircuit readership nearly shut out “The Godfather Part III” which was only able to pull in a sole mention for Cinematography.

“Dick Tracy” tied 1995’s “Braveheart” as the most nominated film in ACCA history to not receive a Best Picture nomination, with 10.
