ACLU SoCal to Honor Don Cheadle, Justin Tranter & Judy Balaban at Annual Bill of Rights Dinner

On Sunday, November 17, the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California will celebrate the anniversary of the ratification of the Bill of Rights by paying tribute to individuals who are making a difference in the struggle to fulfill the historic promise of “liberty and justice for all.”

“At a time when our rights and freedoms are under all-out attack,” said ACLU SoCal Executive Director Hector Villagra, “we are proud to pay tribute to our honorees. Their work and dedication inspire us.”

Don Cheadle | Bill of Rights Award
Actor, Producer, Director, Activist
Don Cheadle is an Oscar and Emmy-nominated, and SAG Award winning-actor who has shown his deep commitment to social justice by speaking out and advocating for important issues including racial and gender equality; immigration and equation reform; reproductive rights; LGBTQ rights; ending gun violence; and the climate crisis.

Justin Tranter | Bill of Rights Award
Songwriter, Activist
Justin Tranter has not only redefined popular music through their work with some of the biggest artists on the planet, but has also redefined what it means to be an advocate through music. Justin has been an outspoken and powerful voice for the LGBTQIA+ community, diversity, the climate crisis, arts education, animal rights, and ending gun violence.

Judy Balaban | Ramona Ripston Liberty, Justice & Equality Award
ACLU SoCal Board Member, Lifelong Activist
Judy Balaban has been a lifelong champion of civil rights and liberties. Voting rights, economic justice, fair employment, affordable health care, education, criminal justice reform, free speech, consumer rights, and veterans’ rights have all benefited from her advocacy. Judy has served as a board member of the ACLU SoCal for over 40 years.

In addition to the honorees, the evening will also feature special appearances by Selena Gomez and Regina Hall, with a performance from Golden Globe & Emmy-nominated actress and singer Chrissy Metz.

Additional performers, presenters, and special guests to be announced.

The ACLU of Southern California’s 2019 Bill of Rights Dinner will be held Sunday, November 17, 2019 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. Tickets are available at www.aclusocal.org/billofrights.

Founded in 1923 as the first affiliate of the ACLU, the ACLU of Southern California (ACLU SoCal) defends fundamental rights outlined in the United States Constitution. These include the right to freedom of speech and assembly, the right to religious freedom, due process of law, equality before the law, and the right to privacy.
