AFI Lists 10 Films and TV Programs of 2017

As critics groups and guilds unveil their nominees and awards for the Best of 2017, AFI has also weighed in.

Each year, the American Film Institute selects ten films and ten television series that are “the year’s most culturally and artistically significant.” Unlike other awards, the AFI Awards are given to the projects as a whole, recognizing the collaborative nature of each medium.

In many years, a number of the selected films go on to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. Last year’s list included “La La Land,” “Manchester by the Sea,” and eventual winner “Moonlight.” They also included three films that were not nominated for Best Picture: “Silence,” “Sully,” and “Zootopia.” The last film, however, did win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

This year’s AFI Awards recipients for film are:

  • “The Big Sick”
  • “Call Me By Your Name”
  • “Dunkirk”
  • “The Florida Project”
  • “Get Out”
  • “Lady Bird”
  • “The Post”
  • “The Shape of Water”
  • “Three Billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri”
  • “Wonder Woman”

The television series selected for 2017 were:

  • “Big Little Lies”
  • “The Crown”
  • “Feud: Bette and Joan”
  • “Game of Thrones”
  • “The Good Place”
  • “The Handmaid’s Tale”
  • “Insecure”
  • “Master of None”
  • “Stranger Things 2”
  • “This Is Us”

Most of the selected television series were nominated for Primetime Emmy awards in 2017, and all are eligible for Golden Globes.
