Apple Announces Game Service Apple Arcade

Today is a big day for Apple. They’re expected to announce details about their television streaming service, though that’s not all. They’ve also dropped some information about an interesting new facet of their quest to dominate entertainment. They’re looking to take over the world of gaming.

Variety details how Apple has announced Apple Arcade, which is a gaming subscription service. It’ll cover not just mobile games either, but ones you’d normally play at home in your living room. It’s an ambitious platform by the company, which will fill the service with exclusive titles for gamers.

From the report:

Apple detailed its long-rumored gaming subscription service during a special event it held in Cupertino, California Monday.

Apple Arcade is the world’s first game subscription service for mobile, desktop and living room, the company said. With a single subscription, you get access to more than 100 new and exclusive games. The games won’t be on any other mobile platform, according to Apple. The subscription will let you download and play as many of the Apple Arcade games as you want. They all feature cross-play between Apple devices, support family support — so everyone in a family shares the games for one fee — and all of them will be playable offline.

Apple Arcade, which hits this fall in 150 countries, will be curated by the same Apple team that curates the store. Pricing and further details will be announced later this year.

Apple also announced a handful of games coming to the service Monday including “Beyond a Steel Sky,” “Where Cards Fall,” “FANTASIAN,” “Lifelike,” and “Overland.”

This service is clearly part of Apple’s plan to make subscription services for all of your entertainment needs. Games, music, television, and soon film, they’ll cover you.

When he’s not obsessing over new Oscar predictions on a weekly basis, Joey is seeing between 300 and 350 movies a year. He views the best in order to properly analyze the awards race/season each year, but he also watches the worst for reasons he mostly sums up as "so you all don't have to". In his spare time, you can usually find him complaining about the Jets or the Mets. Still, he lives and dies by film. Joey's a voting member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association.
