Ava DuVernay will NOT be directing ‘Black Panther’

Ava-DuVernay-Black-Panther-600x340About a month or two ago, word first leaking out that Marvel was hot for Ava DuVernay to direct one of their upcoming superhero flicks. Initially, rumors had it being for either Black Panther or Captain Marvel, but before long it appeared obvious that it was the former project the two parties were meeting about. Things were mostly quiet, though recently some had whispered that it was all but a done deal for DuVernay to helm Black Panther. Well, reports now from her have confirmed that she’s turned Marvel down. Apparently she didn’t see eye to eye with the studio on how to make the movie her own. It’s not surprising, as this sort of a flick always is a balancing act between corporate responsibilities and artistic vision. Frankly, it’s usually a surprise when someone is able to put their filmmaking stamp on things. Regardless, another director is needed for Black Panther, which will still star Chadwick Boseman. Names like F. Gary Gray and Spike Lee have been bandied about for admission into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while I wonder if someone like Ryan Coogler would be a perfect choice, but perhaps too perfect, like DuVernay? Time will tell, but the film is still scheduled to come out in July of 2018, so there’s plenty of time to sort it all out. The one thing we know for sure now is that DuVernay is not joining the MCU…
