It feels like it’s been a long, long time since “Rocketman” hit theaters. Despite having favorable reviews and admirable box office returns, its May release is a potential awards handicap. In addition, there’s inevitable “Bohemian Rhapsody” comparisons after the film won four Oscars. It’s left some wondering whether “Rocketman” can reap similar love.
Could they go big for another biopic about a queer British musician? Well, its Best Picture hopes aren’t very high. On Awards Circuit’s Best Picture predictions, we currently have it ranked 31st. However, there’s hope for it in other areas. Particularly, Taron Egerton in Lead Actor for his portrayal of Elton John.
On our Lead Actor predictions, Egerton is on the fringe in 11th place. Depending on how unseen competition shapes up, Egerton could eventually rank higher. Then there’s Best Supporting Actor to consider. As writer Joseph Braverman pointed out, it’s one category “Bohemian Rhapsody” didn’t compete in. It all depends on whether Jamie Bell or Richard Madden becomes the main category push.
Bell is someone who’s been active since “Billy Elliot” back in 2000. His role as Bernie Taupin, John’s friend and songwriter, serves as the picture’s emotional crux. Meanwhile, Madden currently has a buzzy career and the upcoming WWI film “1917” to boost his chances. Plus, he has a juicy villain role as John Reid, John’s abusive manager and lover. Of the two, we’re currently leaning towards Bell who ranks 20th in our Best Supporting Actor predictions.
If there’s one category where it seems like a safe bet, it’s Best Costume Design. The lavish costumes that Egerton wears as John are too colorful and theatrical to resist. Much like with Best Supporting Actor, “Bohemian Rhapsody” didn’t compete there. Same goes for Best Original Song where “I’m Gonna Love Me Again,” performed by Egerton and John, could achieve a bid.
