Hello readers! It’s been a long run in the Halloween Madness tournament, but here we are at the final. Let us review our two contenders’ roads to the final before we reveal our winner.
First up, “The Shining” was a dominant film through its division and in the semi-final. It defeated classics like “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and “Halloween” by more than 15 percentage points. It also rolled through contemporary hits like “Audition” and “The Conjuring” by at least 50 points. Considering it was the number one seed overall heading into the tournament, this isn’t surprising, but remains impressive considering the competition.
On the other hand, “The Exorcist” had the thinnest room for error on its way to the final. In the first two rounds it knocked off cinema classics “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “The Birds” with huge margins of victory. However, it quickly got into a series of close bouts over the next three rounds. It defeated “Jaws” by 13 points, then escaped against both “Alien” and “Psycho” by a single vote each. If you look at which film had the tougher road, it was undeniably “The Exorcist.”
With that in mind, it’s time to announce our winner. Once again, we have an extremely close match-up. However, while “The Exorcist” had prevailed in close match-ups, it couldn’t muster enough magic this time. Our winner of the Awards Circuit Halloween Madness 2016 tournament is none other than Stanley Kubrick‘s masterpiece, “The Shining!” Anchored by a phenomenal performance by Jack Nicholson and other great performances by Shelley Duvall and Scatman Crothers, the film obviously holds up in its appeal today. The final match-up with “The Exorcist” was decided 50.7% to 49.3%, so it was a hard fought battle.
Thanks again to all who voted and I hope you enjoyed the battle for the Halloween Madness champion. It was a fun little tournament, and we hope to bring it back in years to come. Look for potential ACCA and Academy Idol voting to kick up in the near future. We’re not too far away from the 2016 Awards Season to really get going!
