Comedy starlet Awkwafina will star alongside funny guy Ike Barinholtz in the upcoming comedy project “Crime After Crime.” This has major comedy chemistry potential that will be kept on the radar.
Barinholtz and Awkwafina will also serve as producers on the film. The script is being handled by Dan Gurewitch and David Young. Nick Stoller and Conor Welch will also be producing the film under their joint production company Stoller Global Solutions. STX Films will be backing the film’s production under the representation of Kate Vorhoff and Catherine Hagedorn.
As reported by Variety:
Awkwafina will portray a millennial podcast host who agrees to help a convict that she has devoted her true-crime podcast to prove his innocence after he escapes jail and turns up at her house.
“Awkwafina and Ike are comedy powerhouses who make a supremely funny duo, and we can’t wait to see what they bring to this sharp and fun material,” said Adam Fogelson, chairman of STXfilms.
Awkwafina is one of last year’s greatest breakthrough stars, having starred in the crazy successful global hit “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Ocean’s Eight.” She can soon be seen as Billi in the Lulu Wang-directed Sundance favorite “The Farewell” when it releases July 12 from A24. She is also attached to star in the untitled sequel to “Jumanji: The Lost World.”
Barinholtz has grown to be the go-to comedy relief of a casting. He has been cast in supporting roles which include the Hulu produced show “The Mindy Project,” last year’s raunchy comedy hit “Blockers” and soon this summer in the Mindy Kaling-written Sundance hit “Late Night,” releasing June 7. He made his directorial debut last year with his film “The Oath,” where he starred alongside Tiffany Haddish.
Not much else has been revealed on this upcoming comedy outing. It has yet to claim a director.
