BAFTA Nominations – Elliot and King Snubbed While ‘The Favourite’ Holds Court

Olivia Colman The Favourite 2

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced their 2019 nominees, and there is a lot to digest. BAFTA remains one of the major precursors for the Oscar season, and nominees and winners here have shown strength here before winning the big prize at Oscar. Unsurprisingly, “The Favourite” led the pack, earning 12 nominations including Best Film. A handful of films landed at 7 nominations on the morning, including “A Star Is Born,” and “Roma,” both of which grabbed Best Film nominations.

Bohemian Rhapsody” also reached 7 nominations, but was relegated to Best British film. “First Man” came back in a big way, also earning 7 nominations. However, it missed Best Film and Best Director, instead getting above-the-line nominations for Adapted Screenplay and Supporting Actress for Claire Foy. One of the bigger surprises came from “Cold War,” which earned nominations for Best Film Not in English, Director, Cinematography and Screenplay.

There were some big ommissions in various categories as well. “Black Panther” was almost entirely shut out, only picking up a nomination for Visual Effects. “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” was snubbed in Best Documentary, marking its first miss of the season. “Minding the Gap” missed the category as well. Meanwhile, Regina King missed a BAFTA nod, indicative of a lack of support for “If Beale Street Could Talk, ” which only received 2 nominations.

Overall, the nominations show a different side to the race. It’ll be curious to see how the nominations carry over to the Oscars. Let us hear your thoughts in the comments below, and check out the full list of nominations.

I had a feeling Regina King would not make the nominations but BAFTA needs to do a bit better with movies that only has a Black cast, Latin cast or Asian cast.

Looks like a donut for ASIB.

Michael R

I am seriously worried for Sam Elliott.

Kellen

After this week, I’m getting concerned about Black Panther. It has missed consistently this week and while I still see it getting into Picture, I think its chances of making other above the line nominations are fading.

Michael

My heart breaks for Emily Blunt.

Very happy that Viola got in.

I fail to understand the overwhelming adoration for Regina King. Again, this is only my opinion, but I was so so excited for “Beale Street.” I anticipated it and was so hyped for it, but then I viewed it and I liked it. I didn’t love it. I liked Regina King, whose performance is subtle and subdued at best and underwhelming and lacking at worse. I never truly felt moved. She has consistently failed to score nominations in key races while folks keep pointing out to nonsensical excuses why she isn’t making it in. Bottom line: Folks are trying way… Read more »

As expected, King missed out there. I was plentiful sure she was gonna miss out.

I’m shocked at the Elliot snub though.

People are finally seeing that ASiB is overhyped. I doubt it’s gonna win anything besides music based awards (and maybe Supporting at the Oscar).
