Netflix’s troubled action film “Triple Frontier” has lost yet another hopeful star. Ben Affleck (“Argo”) will not be moving forward with the production, according to Variety. Affleck was going to star in the film after Tom Hardy (“Mad Max: Fury Road) and Channing Tatum (“Hail Caesar!”) dropped out. The pair reportedly left the project due to scheduling conflicts with other films, just four weeks before filming was to begin. The film is an action-adventure set on the borders of Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil, where the Iguazu and Parana rivers meet. The film’s script is written by Mark Boal (“Zero Dark Thirty”), and will still star Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali (“Moonlight”).
According to Deadline, who first reported the news, Affleck is leaving “Triple Frontier” to focus on his family and personal health. The actor, writer and director also stepped down from directing “The Batman” earlier this year, in which he plays Batman.
The latest setback is par for the course for “Triple Frontier,” which has been a revolving door for directors, actors, and studios alike. Tatum and Hardy dropped out of the film when Paramount abandoned the project due to budgeting issues. Before that, Katherine Bigelow (“The Hurt Locker”) was to direct, but is now executive producing. Tom Hanks (“Sully), Will Smith (“Concussion”), and Johnny Depp (“Alice in Wonderland”) were previously interested in the film before Tatum and Hardy were attached. When the film was picked up by Netflix, Casey Affleck (“Manchester By the Sea”) and his brother were to star. It’s unclear if the younger Affleck will stay on after his brother’s departure.
Charles Roven and Alex Gartner from Atlas Entertainment will still produce. Boal, Bigelow, Stephen Jones, Neil Doson, and Anna Gerb will executive produce. According to Deadline, the film is still gaining momentum as the cast quickly fills out. However, no premiere date has been announced for “Triple Frontier.”
Affleck can be seen next in his film “Justice League,” where he will reprise his role as Batman. He will also be attending San Diego Comic Con this weekend.
