On Wednesday, Studiocanal, Amazon Studios and Film4 announced Benedict Cumberbatch (“Avengers: Endgame”) and Claire Foy (“The Crown”) will be starring in the feature drama “Louis Wain,” directed by Will Sharpe (“Black Pond”). The film follows the story of Wain (Cumberbatch), the British artist best known for his whimsically rendered cat paintings. The story will focus on Wain’s inspirational and courageous life.

Benedict Cumberbatch said “I am thrilled by the prospect of playing the courageous, playful spirit that is Louis Wain and to be producing such a special film. I have admired Will’s work for several years through Flowers and from the moment we first met, knew he was the perfect person to bring Louis’ inspirational and odyssean story to life. Together we plan to bring audiences a sincerely uplifting, playful, thought provoking tale of resilience, creativity and the enduring power of love”.

Will Sharpe said “I feel very excited to be working on this story about the little known but unique and inspiring Louis Wain. Benedict, Claire, Andrea, Toby – it’s a dream cast and we have a fantastic team behind the camera too. It’s going to be a real pleasure to build this world with such a wonderful group of people”.

“The Bachelor Party” by Louis WainSharpe is a BAFTA nominated filmmaker recognized for his scripted work on the British comedy series, “Flowers.” He now writes “Louis Wain” along with Simon Stephenson. Producing are Guy Heeley (“Locke,” “Denial”) and Adam Ackland (“Patrick Melrose”) with Ed Clarke & Leah Clarke.

Cumberbatch was recently seen in Marvel’s “Avengers: Endgame.” A Disney+ series for Doctor Strange is in the works for the actor. He will also star in Sam Mendes’ war drama, “1917.” Foy was seen in Damien Chazelle’s “First Man” last year. She won a Golden Globe in 2017 for her role in “The Crown.” Also starring in Sharpe’s film are Andrea Riseborough (“Birdman”) and Toby Jones (“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”).

“Louis Wain” is being produced by Sunnymarch and Shoebox Films and financed by Studiocanal & Film4. Studiocanal will be distributing the film upon release in its territories UK, France, Germany, Australia/NZ selling worldwide. Amazon Studios will release in the US. UTA, Independent Film Group alongside Studiocanal negotiated the deal.
