After years of rumors, it seems to be official. The Wyld Stallyns are reuniting.

The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that “Bill & Ted Face the Music” is in the works, 27 years after their bogus journey. The film will reunite Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves as time-traveling wannabe musicians Bill S. Preston Esq, and “Ted” Theodore Logan.

The original film, “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure,” was released in 1989. It was the story of two academically under-performing teenagers who receive help from Rufus, a visitor from the future. Bill and Ted have a very important destiny. The future of the world depends on the pair getting an A on their history project. So, naturally, they embark on a journey through time to collect historical figures via a phone booth.

THR describes the new film, which is now in preproduction:

Bill & Ted Face the Music” will see the duo long past their days as time-traveling teenagers and now weighed down by middle age and the responsibilities of family. They’ve written thousands of tunes, but they have yet to write a good one, much less the greatest song ever written. With the fabric of time and space tearing around them, a visitor from the future warns our heroes that only their song can save life as we know it. Out of luck and fresh out of inspiration, Bill and Ted set out on a time travel adventure to seek the song that will set their world right and bring harmony in the universe as we know it. Together with the aid of their daughters, a new crop of historical figures, and some sympathetic music legends, they find much, much more than just a song.

Not only are Reeves and Winter reprising their roles, Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon returned to write the new script. Dean Parisot will direct. Among many other projects, Matheson and Solomon wrote the first two films. Parisot has directed a lot of TV, including “Monk,” “Grace and Frankie,” and “The Santa Clarita Diet.” He also directed the cult classic “Galaxy Quest.”

Reeves and Winter said in a statement:

“We couldn’t be more excited to get the whole band back together again. Chris and Ed wrote an amazing script, and with Dean at the helm we’ve got a dream team!”

After Bill & Ted, Reeves went on to action stardom with films like “Speed” and “The Matrix.” He also balanced his work with drama before gaining a resurgence with John Wick. The road hasn’t been as easy for Alex Winter. He took on roles here and there in the 90s, but took a long break from acting before returning to TV. This film will be his first starring role in many years, and it is a welcome return.
