There was a bit of a surprise at the top this weekend as “The Upside” outperformed expectations and captured the box office crown. The upset prevented “Aquaman” from topping the box office for a fourth consecutive weekend. But don’t feel too bad for “Aquaman” as this weekend pushed it past the $1B mark at the global box office. It now becomes the first movie in the DC Extended Universe to reach that threshold.

The Upside” was able to overcome a mixed critical response to deliver $19.6M and further solidify Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston as box office draws. This is the first #1 debut for its studio, STX.

Coming in at #3 is “A Dog’s Way Home.” The Sony release grossed $11.3 in its opening frame. Sony was also able to capture the fourth and fifth spots in this week’s top 10 with “Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse” and “Escape Room.”

This was the fifth weekend for “Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse” and it declined only 31% on the back of strong reviews and winning the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film. It will be interesting to track its box office performance as the race for the Best Animated Feature Oscar heats up.

Escape Room” rounds out the top five with $8.9M in its second weekend. That brings its domestic total to $32.4M.

The rest of the top 10 is largely filled with movies in or near the awards conversation. “Mary Poppins Returns” grossed $7.2M to bring its domestic total to just over $150M.

On the Basis of Sex” got its first weekend in wider release and clocked in at $6.2M. While “The Mule” and “Vice” rounded out the top 10 and brought their domestic totals to $90.6 and $35.9M, respectively.
