(“Manchester By The Sea
”) may have accidentally confirmed rumors that his brother, Ben Affleck
”) will not be playing Batman in future DC films. The younger Affleck was in an interview with WEEI Sports Radio
when asked about his brother’s role as the beloved superhero. According to a transcript from Slashfilm
, Affleck said of Affleck’s role:
[Joking around] I thought he was an okay Batman. No, I thought he was great. He was great. He’s a hero, so he had something to channel and work with there. But he’s not going to do that movie, I don’t think. Sorry to say.
The ensuing uproar and further questions from the show’s radio hosts seemingly surprised Affleck, who began to backtrack, replying, “Is that breaking news? Because I was just kind of making that up, I don’t know.” It’s currently unclear if the comment was an attempt to troll his older brother on his 45th birthday, or the reveal was an honest mistake, a secret Affleck didn’t realize was still under wraps. As Slashfilm points out, a confirmation or denial from more official sources is sure to be coming soon.
After his appearance in the upcoming “Justice League,” Affleck is supposed to star in solo film “The Batman,” directed by Matt Reeves
(“War for the Planet of the Apes
”). He was originally going to direct the film himself, but stepped down in order to concentrate more on his private life and do the role justice. Reeves quickly scrapped the script Affleck wrote with Geoff Johns
(“The Flash”). The younger Affleck’s interview only adds fuel to the fire on recent speculations that Ben will get the axe after “Justice League,” which have been swirling since he stepped down as director.
For now, principal photography is still officially set to begin on Reeves’ “The Batman” film next year, with Affleck in the starring role. If the superhero isn’t recast first.
