On the agenda:

* Sending our thoughts and prayers to everyone dealing with the wildfires in California.
* Going over a bit of news that includes “The Assistant” being released in January, after debuting strongly at Telluride, the drop of HBO’s “Watchmen,” Paul Dano’s casting as Riddler in “The Batman,” and more.
* The final trailer for “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” dropped and we have many thoughts about it.
* Is “The Two Popes” from Fernando Meirelles more of a contender than “Marriage Story” from Noah Baumbach with its various audience awards? Should Netflix make a focus shift?
* Thoughts on the first screenings for “Little Women” from Greta Gerwig and “Bombshell” from Jay Roach.
* Gotham Nominations have been announced and films like “Waves” and contenders like Adam Sandler (“Uncut Gems”) are off to a great start.  Is there room for “High Flying Bird” anywhere in the season?
* Switches on the prediction side that includes “Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood” going into Comedy/Musical (as once reported), “The Two Popes” going Drama, along with “Bombshell.”
* A segment on the precursors and films that could hit with certain guilds and groups.

On the agenda:

* Clayton had jury duty this week and tells us all about it. A discussion of past experiences on juries follows.
* A look at the box office, which was led by “Abominable.” Following that, a look at if any of the year’s top-grossing films will be major award contenders like “Aladdin” and “Captain Marvel.”
* Where and when will the world experience Sam Mendes’ “1917” and how is Universal Pictures going to handle its slate that includes “Cats,” “Queen & Slim,” and “Us.”
* The New York Film Festival officially opened up with Martin Scorsese‘s epic “The Irishman.” Going over the reactions from those that were in attendance.  Is it an awards player and can Scorsese nab a second Oscar for it?
* A discussion on where everyone sees “Avengers: Endgame” in the Best Picture race.
* Best Director talk, with a focus on the DGA and if First Time Feature could have an all-female lineup for the first time in history?  Can any of them translate to the Academy?  Is that category made for Olivia Wilde for “Booksmart?”
* Some further Oscar check-ins following screenings of Taika Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit,” (the Thomasin McKenzie show?) Rupert Goold’s “Judy,” (which opened in theaters) and the Best Actor race (top-heavy with just nine contenders?).
* Ending with Golden Globe chatter that includes some exclusive news on Lulu Wang’s “The Farewell” and its eligibility and all the classification discrepancies that the HFPA continues to have.

On the agenda:

* The hit television show “Downton Abbey” opened to a lot of money and talk about how the fans like it and how Maggie Smith looks prime bait for a Golden Globe and BAFTA nomination but will that translate to Best Picture?
* Giving some more thoughts on “Ad Astra” and how it deserves an awards push despite the low audience scores.
* Diving into the Oscar-hype for Jennifer Lopez and her work in “Hustlers” and if it is, in fact, real.
* NEON is gearing up for a strong campaign for Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite.” It can begin to rack up nomination tallies as we begin to add up picture, director, supporting actor, original screenplay, editing, and perhaps sound categories, but will Oscar go for it?
* Exploring our thoughts on Edward Norton’s “Motherless Brooklyn,” which screened for SAG members and Rupert Goold’s “Judy,” which is showing power for Renée Zellweger in Lead Actress.
* What gives on Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” lately?  Can late releases such as “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” or still make an impact?
* Is the Supporting Actress REALLY the weakest acting race?  We share our thoughts on the contenders and how the Academy won’t look in places they should for more viable options (i.e. Billie Lourd in “Booksmart” and Frances Conroy in “Joker“).
* Speaking of “Joker,” Karen Peterson offers her initial thoughts while Clayton Davis does his best imitation of “Film Twitter.”
* Animated Feature race has lots of room for movement with GKIDS releasing a bunch of possibilities.
* LEJA (Latino Entertainment Journalists Association) announced its inaugural LEJA TV nominees where “Barry” led.

On the agenda:

* Talking about the box office this past weekend. “Good Boys” led the way with a surprisingly strong haul, while “Blinded by the Light” and “Where’d You Go, Bernadette” were ignored. This led to some discussion about Richard Linklater, as well as some chatter about how you would interview a filmmaker whose work you didn’t care for.
* While discussing Linklater, a comparison emerged with Tony Scott. This turned into some talk about which of Scott’s films are everyone’s favorite.
* A number of Trailers dropped, so they were broken down. This included “Dolemite is My Name,” “A Hidden Life,” “Little Women,” and “Parasite.”
* The Telluride Film Festival is only a few weeks away. Potential titles at the fest were speculated about.
* R.I.P. Peter Fonda.
* Emmy voting is underway. Discussion included if a Best Drama upset was brewing or if “Game of Thrones” will walk away with a win, the chances of “Barry” in Best Drama, and much more
* An Oscar check in. “The Farewell” and “Parasite” are moving up in Clayton’s predictions. Some chatter about the Supporting categories, as well as the middling nature of Best Animated Feature so far this year.
* Finally, some baseball chatter!

* It’s our 150th episode of the Circuit Breaker podcast!
* Comic-Con happened and we’re discussing the MCU lineup that was announced and that included “The Eternals,” “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” “WandaVision,” “Loki,” “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” “What If…?,” “Hawkeye,” “Thor: Love and Thunder,” “Black Widow,” and “Blade.”
* Touching on the other announcements that have included AMC’s “The Walking Dead” and where it’s going.
* Our reaction to the first trailer for Tom Hooper’s “Cats” and all of its digital fur.  Will it be as divisive as we think or will we all be on the same page about its quality?
* Norman Jewison‘s birthday was celebrated and we talk about our favorite film from the iconic director.  With a filmography that includes “…And Justice for All,” “In the Heat of the Night,” “Fiddler on the Roof,” “Moonstruck,” and “The Hurricane,” there are plenty to choose from.

On the agenda:

* The AwardsCircuit TV Team that includes Editor-in-Chief Clayton Davis, along with contributing writers Christopher James, Alan French, and in her debut episode Jessica White, come together to digest the television awards landscape that was laid out earlier this week with the 2019 Emmy Nominations.
* HBO’s “Game of Thrones” leads the charge with a record-breaking 32 citations from the TV Academy but other shows “overperformed” including Prime Video’s “Fleabag” and Netflix’s “When They See Us,” with others “underperforming” including HBO’s “Veep” and Prime Video’s “Homecoming.”
* Acting contenders have revealed themselves in the landscape, and it has possibly made frontrunners emerge such as like Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul”), Jared Harris (“Chernobyl”), Michelle Williams (“Fosse/Verdon”), Bill Hader (“Barry”), Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”), Sandra Oh (“Killing Eve”), Tony Shalhoub (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Olivia Colman (“Fleabag”), Peter Dinklage (“Game of Thrones”), Julia Garner (“Ozark”), Paul Dano (“Escape at Dannemora”), and Patricia Clarkson (“Sharp Objects”).
* We know “frontrunners” are never that simple, which leads us into where everyone stands this far out.

On the agenda:

* Clayton’s mid-life crisis has started!  After a night of watching random movie trailers from the 90s, he’s decided to incorporate all those random movie titles into every few segments in the episode.  Fair warning: it’s “Dad Joke”-level bad and there’s no shame coming from the East Coast critic.
* Jon Favreau’s “The Lion King” has premiered for critics and we’re divided on the film’s relevance, quality, and what it presents for the future of cinema.  The film, which stars Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Alfre Woodard, Billy Eichner, Beyonce Knowles-Carter, John Oliver, John Kani, and James Earl Jones, has stunning visuals but is that enough of a reason to remake this, and any other classic Disney films that will come after it?
* Discussing our educated guess for which films will premiere and screen at Venice, Telluride, Toronto, New York, and AFI Film Festivals.  We utilize the Oscar Predictions as our touchpoint in making guesses (and suggestions?) on where would be a good spot to premiere certain films for certain studios.  This includes “Harriet” from Kasi Lemmons, “1917” from Sam Mendes, “The Irishman” from Martin Scorsese, “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” from Marielle Heller, “The Goldfinch” from John Crowley, “The Laundromat” from Steven Soderbergh, and more.

On the agenda:

* Karen Peterson is back and meaner than ever! (but we love her still)
* From a question from one of our readers, we’re discussing our picks for actors/actresses/filmmakers who are long shots for future Academy Award love but are deserving, nonetheless.
* We share our reactions to the weekend’s most notable new release, “Yesterday.” Did Danny Boyle and Richard Curtis make good use of their high concept? Could Himesh Patel be a future Golden Globe nominee?
* The “Yesterday” chatter leads into a look at potential Golden Globe nominees in the category of Best Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical.
* “Toy Story 4” as the leader of the pack in Best Animated Feature. What else could challenge it?
* Clayton Davis and Joey Magidson have seen “Spider-Man: Far From Home” and have a spoiler-free discussion about the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe offering. Then, where could the MCU go from here? Specifically, a rumored Phase Four lineup is discussed.
* Some Emmy chatter: Will HBO suffer from putting all their eggs in the “Game of Thrones” basket? How effective was Netflix’s FYSee campaign?
* “Stranger Things” unleashes its third season on July 4 and Karen attended the premiere. What did she think?  Is it the best season yet?
* We wrap up with our thoughts on the first two Democratic debates that aired on MSNBC.

* We’re joined by new AwardsCircuit contributor Ryan McQuade who is filling in this week and introducing his likes and dislikes in film.
* From a question from one of our readers, we’re discussing our favorite movie scores of the past decade.  This also leads to a discussion that asks the question, which Oscar Score lineup is the best of the last decade as well.  With lineups that have included “The Social Network,” “The Artist,” “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” and “If Beale Street Could Talk,” which lineup gets top marks?
* Who has been our favorite Batman and our favorite Bruce Wayne?  Two separate questions with a lot more to digest.
* Jamie Lee Curtis is confirmed for the second “Halloween” due out in 2020.
* Big openings during the weekend that included Pixar’s “Toy Story 4” and Orion’s “Child’s Play.”  Sharing our thoughts, likes, and issues with each of them.  Did Woody get his own “ending” and what did we think of this Chucky update?

* Talking about the 20 year anniversary of the release of George Lucas’ “Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace” and if it is still a good or bad film.
* What is our favorite lineup from the Academy Awards’ Best Supporting Actress lineup since the year 2000?  This was asked by a reader and we begin to go through each year that included Mo’Nique (“Precious”), Catherine Zeta-Jones (“Chicago”), Marcia Gay Harden (“Pollock”), and more.  What is your favorite?
* If there was a “Straight 10” lineup before 2008, what films do we think would have filled out the lineup?  There’s plenty of believers that “The Dark Knight” was there but were there any other choices?
* Our thoughts on Robert Pattinson being cast as Bruce Wayne/Batman in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman.”  Is he the right choice or was there someone better for the job?

* Coming from one of our esteemed readers, we are picking out the best Oscar lineup for the category of DIRECTOR since the year 2000.  Are we soft for Kathryn Bigelow’s historic win and her lineup or did something more recent tickle our fancy?

On the agenda:

* The Oscars were revealed and there was plenty to digest.
* “Green Book” won 3 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Supporting Actor for Mahershala Ali, and Original Screenplay.  Film Twitter (and some on staff) are very unhappy.
* “The Favourite” didn’t do as well as we thought it would but it did upset in Best Actress with Olivia Colman winning over presumed lock Glenn Close (“The Wife”).
* Rami Malek won an Oscar for “Bohemian Rhapsody” and we look at his win against history moving forward.
* Regina King is an Academy Award winner and life is good.
* Spike Lee is an Academy Award winner and life is good.
* “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” did it in the end and we couldn’t be happier.
* “Black Panther” showed strength and might have been closer to a Best Picture win than we think.
* Every Best Picture nominee won an Oscar, and what does this new Academy look like when spreading the wealth?
* What are our picks for Oscars 2020 Best Picture?  Year-In-Advanced guesses happen.

On the agenda:

* The final Oscar Predictions for Sunday’s Academy Awards ceremony is unleashed.  We discuss all the winners including:
* Best Picture: Is it still a race between “Green Book” or “Roma” or is something else coming up the middle?
* Best Director: Seems made for Alfonso Cuaron but could Spike Lee pull a last-minute switcheroo?
* Best Actor: Rami Malek has a lot of big wins but is Bradley Cooper pulling an Adrien Brody at the last minute?
* Best Actress: Does Olivia Colman‘s win at BAFTA have the juice to turn the tides her way from Glenn Close?
* Best Supporting Actor: Can Mahershala Ali lose and who can he lose to?
* Best Supporting Actress: Most wide open acting race where almost any of the ladies can win it in the end?  Did BAFTA give us a hint with Rachel Weisz?
* Screenplay categories: With WGA going their own way, what does this mean in this wide open field?
* Tech categories: Some categories seem locked (Song), others are still in flux (almost all of them?).  How many is the Best Picture winner going to win?
* Animated, Docs, Foreign, and Shorts: Some seem solidified but this new Academy can do some strange things.

* We talk about an old Oscar category (that can still be activated) and what the nominees and winners would be.
* What is the strongest Best Actor lineup since the 2000s?
* We rank a list of actors and actresses that are most likely to win an Oscar in their careers.
* The BAFTA winners have been announced where “Roma” prevailed over “The Favourite” (which was the favorite with the group).  What do these winners mean to the Oscar race and will the Academy pay special attention for their own choices?
* What are some of the staff’s predictions going into this final Oscar voting round?  Can “Roma” triumph over “Green Book” or can “The Favourite” or “BlacKkKlansman” come up the middle?  Can the SAG Ensemble win bring “Black Panther” to a historic win without acting, writing, or editing?

* Oscars are having their worst PR year ever, with the news that they will only have 2 songs performed at the ceremony, Lady Gaga (“Shallow” from “A Star is Born”) and Kendrick Lamar (“All the Stars” from “Black Panther”).  Is it time for John Bailey to move on?
* The 2018 Awards Circuit Community Awards are being announced where “A Star is Born” leads the charge with 13 nominations with “The Favourite” behind with 12.  Are they any surprises decided by the readers?

* This is a special edition of the Circuit Breaker podcast.  Host Clayton Davis is joined by Emmy Award winner Jenelle Riley, Awards and Features Editor of Variety, along with Erik Anderson, founder, and editor of AwardsWatch.
* Looking at the Oscar nominations from Tuesday from different perspectives, more notably the reactions from the different coasts, we’re discussing the surprises and exclusions in the major categories.
* Beginning with our feelings about the nominations announcement.  Did it work and why was John Bailey missing?
* Best Picture produced eight nominees this year and only three of them have the “right” nominations to win the top prize but is it that simple?
* “BlacKkKlansman” from Spike Lee is showing strength despite the miss for John David Washington in Best Actor.  Is it the frontrunner?
* “A Star is Born” and “Green Book” missed out key mentions despite being touted as frontrunners and now “Roma” seems to have the momentum.  How does it shake out with DGA and BAFTA on the horizon?
* “The Favourite” has 10 nominations, tied for the most of the night.  Is there a road for it in the top category?
* There could be a default four-person acting winners club: Christian Bale (“Vice”), Glenn Close (“The Wife”), Mahershala Ali (“Green Book”), and Regina King (“If Beale Street Could Talk”).  But not so fast…the SAG Awards are this weekend and could throw a wrench in the works.

On the agenda:

* It’s that time!  The annual “FINAL” Oscar Predictions podcast.  The entire team is on discussing all the categories with an emphasis on some of the most wide open races.
* How many Best Picture nominees will there be?  Is there a “Phantom Thread” in the works?
* How diverse will our Best Director lineup be, and is there room for a Ben Affleck-level type snub?
* Did SAG get most of the acting races correct?  Can the vulnerable John David Washington (“BlacKkKlansman”), Emily Blunt (“Mary Poppins Returns”), Timothee Chalamet (“Beautiful Boy”), or Melissa McCarthy hold on?
* Supporting Actress is in flux, and we just don’t know who is on the table anymore of the nine contenders.  Is there room for Thomasin McKenzie (“Leave No Trace”) to surprise?
* The screenplay races seem to both have six contenders vying for five spots.  Usually, that means, two big ones missing in each.
* The tech races are always a question mark, but with the bakeoffs announcing, we have a bit more guidance.  Film Editing remains the most challenging race to predict, and we may be foreseeing a 2 or 3 film overlap in the sound categories.

On the agenda:

* An evening at the Golden Globes resulted in plenty of surprises: “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Green Book” took the top prizes while Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”), Glenn Close (“The Wife”), Christian Bale (“Vice”), Olivia Colman (“The Favourite”), Mahershala Ali (“Green Book”), and Regina King (“If Beale Street Could Talk”) took the acting awards.  What does all this mean to the Oscar race?
* Editing is going to be an indicator of support for one of the frontrunners for Best Picture.  We discuss.
* We’re giving you our instant reactions following the show, taking some of your questions, and even have time for a game or two!  We have a few Cinephile Showdowns from the readers and with “category fraud” being a hot topic these days, one of our esteemed readers gives us a few performances to discuss if they are LEAD or SUPPORTING, and some of them are headscratchers?
