The Orchard and MoviePass Ventures unveiled the official poster for its upcoming film, “American Animals.”
The two companies partnered to acquire the film last month after its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah.
“American Animals” is based on the true story of four young men from the suburbs who attempt to pull off an audacious heist of art and artifacts from a university library’s valuable collection.
Evan Peters (“American Horror Story”), Barry Keoghan (“The Killing of a Sacred Deer”), Blake Jenner (“The Edge of Seventeen”), and Jared Abrahamson (“Sweet Virginia”) star as the would-be art thieves.
Ann Dowd (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) and Udo Kier (“Downsizing”) also star.
Bart Layton wrote and directed the film. He won a BAFTA for his debut documentary, “The Imposter” in 2012. “American Animals” is his first foray into narrative film. He also directed “Locked Up Abroad” and “16 for a Day” as television movie documentaries. Layton also produced “American Animals” through his production company, Raw.
The Orchard has distributed a number of successful films, including Pablo Larrain’s “Neruda” and Taika Waititi’s “The Hunt for the Wilderpeople.” Their recent releases include “BPM,” “Thelma,” and “11/8/16.”
MoviePass is known for their groundbreaking move to get audiences into theaters. Late last year, they announced MoviePass Ventures as a way to expand their brand into theatrical film distribution. The company plans to co-acquire films with established distributors. This is their first such partnership.
“American Animals” enjoyed a successful premiere in Park City and will screen during the Festival Favorites section of next month’s SXSW film festival.
It will be released nationwide on June 1.
