Mighty Morphin Power Rangers be warned! The first look at Elizabeth Banks as supervillain Rita Repulsa in the upcoming “Power Rangers” film reboot was released earlier this week, and it does not disappoint.
Proving she can do no wrong, Banks looks wonderfully menacing in a green reptilian-like suit, complete with green hair and terrifying nails. The get-up is a far cry from her usual look (although it doesn’t look completely unlike something her “Hunger Games” character Effie Trinket would wear on an off day).
In an interview with PEOPLE, Banks said, “I’ve never played a villain before,” adding that she’s excited for her “world domination – and being unpredictable as a character.”
The film is being based on the classic ‘90s TV show “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers,” which centers around five super teenagers known as the Blue, Black, Yellow, Pink and Red Power Rangers who fight different villains in order to protect humanity. The film remake will feature Repulsa as the main villain.
Of the new take on Repulsa’s costume, Banks said, “It’s definitely a modern and edgy re-imagining of the original Rita Repulsa. We wanted to give her a backstory that connects her to the new Rangers.”
“Power Rangers” also stars Naomi Scott as the Pink Ranger, Becky G. as the Yellow Ranger, RJ Cyler as the Blue Ranger, Dacre Montgomery as the Red Ranger, and Ludi Lin as the Black Ranger. Dean Israelite (“Project Almanac,” “Acholiland”) directs the film, which is slated for release next year on March 24.
