Keeping with the theme of a stellar cast, Chris Pine is joining “A Wrinkle in Time” from director Ava DuVernay.
According to reports, Pine will play the father of lead star Storm Reid. It was recently announced that Gugu Mbatha-Raw would play the mother.
Reid’s first role came by way of Best Picture winner “12 Years a Slave.” Since then, she nabbed the leading role in “American Girl: Lea to the Rescue.” She also appeared in “Sleight,” which had a good showing at Sundance earlier this year.
Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling are also starring in the film. According to THR, Witherspoon will play Mrs. Whatsit and Kaling will play Mrs. Who. In addition, Oprah Winfrey is cast in the film as Mrs. Which.
The Disney sci-fi film is an adaptation of the classic fantasy novel by Madeleine L’Engle. “Frozen” scribe and co-director Jennifer Lee is adapting the screenplay.
“A Wrinkle In Time” involves a young girl, Meg Murry (Reid), whose father is missing. Before his disappearance, he was working on a secret project called a tesseract. The mysterious object involves the fifth dimension of time travel. After a stranger appears, Meg, her friend and her brother set off to find her father. They encounter Mrs. Who, Mrs. Whatsit and Mrs. Which along the way.
According to reports, the film will start production in November in Los Angeles.
Pine has had an outstanding year so far. In the beginning of the year, he starred in Coast Guard drama “The Finest Hours,” and over the summer he headlined “Star Trek Beyond” and “Hell or High Water.” Both films received wide acclaim, with the latter receiving early awards buzz.
“A Wrinkle in Time” does not yet have a release date.
