Circuit Breaker Interview: Director Matthew Miele Chats About His New Doc ‘Always at the Carlyle’

In a city full of iconic places, The Carlyle Hotel is one of New York City’s most fascinating.

With a long history of glamour and intrigue, The Carlyle has hosted the very top of the A-list athletes, politicians, royalty, and movie stars. It is also the proud home of the Cafe Carlyle, one of the only places in New York where you can still catch cabaret-style performances on a regular basis.

Documentary filmmaker Matthew Miele brings the story of The Carlyle to life in his fun new film, “Always at the Carlyle.” Through the help of staff members and guests, Miele seeks to preserve the history of this amazing landmark, committing the stories of the rich and famous forever to film.

The documentary includes interviews with George Clooney, Wes Anderson, Jeff Goldblum, Anjelica Huston, Sofia Coppola, and many more. It reveals sweet stories about unexpected people like Jack Nicholson and pranks by Tom Cruise.

Miele brings his brand of reverent wit to the project. He reveres The Carlyle, just as he did when he told the story of the famed department store in “Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf’s.”

I recently had the opportunity to talk with the director about the film. We discussed what initially captured his attention, and why this was a story he needed to tell. We also talked about how he managed to get the famously discrete staff to open up and share stories. And, of course, how he managed to land interviews with some of The Carlyle’s famous—and infamous—guests.

You can listen to our conversation down below:

We would like to thank Matthew Miele for taking some time to discuss this charming documentary. Be sure to check out the trailer:

“Always at the Carlyle” is distributed by Good Deed Entertainment. It opened last week in New York and expands this week to Los Angeles. Be sure to watch for the film to come to a city near you.
