Circuit Breaker Interview: Mimi Leder, Daniel Stiepleman and Cast Talk About the Ginsburgs and ‘On the Basis of Sex’

(l to r.) Armie Hammer as Marty Ginsburg, Justin Theroux as Melvin Wulf, and Felicity Jones as Ruth Bader Ginsburg star in Mimi Leder's ON THE BASIS OF SEX, a Focus Features release.

The life and work of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg come to life in “On the Basis of Sex.”

Written by Ginsburg’s nephew, Daniel Stiepleman, it tells the story of the only case the Justice ever argued alongside her husband Martin. The narrative focuses on Ginsburg’s years at Harvard Law School, the constant roadblocks trying to find a job after graduation, and the central case, Moretz v. Commissioner of Internal Revenue. But the story is really about the Ginsburgs as a progressive couple, who fought publicly for the equality they shared at home.

Mimi Leder has directed films and television for years. In 1998, she directed “Deep Impact,” which became the highest grossing film directed by a woman. Felicity Jones stars as Ruth Ginsburg. She previously earned an Oscar nomination for “The Theory of Everything” before launching into superstardom as Jyn Erso in “Rogue One.”

Armie Hammer is the gregarious Martin Ginsburg. His breakthrough role came when he starred as both Winklevoss in “The Social Network” in 2010. Last year, he was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance in “Call Me By Your Name.”

Justin Theroux reunites with his “The Leftovers” boss. He has also starred in both film and television, with roles in “American Psycho,” “The Girl on the Train,” and “The Spy Who Dumped Me.”
