Circuit Q&A: What is Your Favorite Kristen Stewart Performance?

Kristen Stewart seems to be having a prolific year. In the new “Charlie’s Angels” reboot, Stewart demonstrates her action star chops. Additionally, she stars in “Seberg,” an upcoming political thriller where she plays famed actress Jean Seberg. Although the film itself had a muddled reception on the festival circuit, Stewart’s performance still received rave reviews. To acknowledge both releases, we’ll be asking you about your favorite work from the acclaimed actress.

Stewart’s most famous work is undoubtedly the “Twilight” series, a cultural phenomenon that cemented her star status. However, even before starring in the franchise, she’s dipped her toes into the indie fare. Films like “Speak,” which premiered at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival before airing on Showtime a year after. As rape victim Melinda Sordino, Stewart is a quiet force of nature.

Still Alice” is another performance that plays into her subtle acting sensibilities. Although Oscar winner Julianne Moore won rapturous praise, Stewart remains the picture’s unsung hero. As the main character’s distant daughter, Stewart is a steady source of empathy and resolve.

After “Still Alice” came another film that allowed Stewart to hold her own against a veteran actress. In “Clouds of Sils Maria,” Stewart plays Valentine, a disgruntled personal assistant for Maria (Juliette Binoche), a film star past her prime. While Stewart may have a sizable amount of screen time, it’s still a genuinely supporting performance, offering wry, scene-stealing humor while fueling the protagonist’s dramatic arc.

For her portrayal, Stewart won the Cesar Award for Best Supporting Actress, becoming the first American actress ever to win a Cesar. She also won a slew of critical plaudits, including the New York Film Critics Circle and National Society of Film Critics Award for Best Supporting Actress.

She then did “Personal Shopper,” where she re-teamed with Olivier Assayas, her “Clouds” director. Unlike that picture, “Personal Shopper” is a meditative horror film about grief. Plus, it features a starring role for Stewart as opposed to a supporting one. She may not have received as many accolades as she did with “Clouds.” Yet, it’s still another excellent example of her exemplary acting prowess.
