Circuit Q&A – Favorite Moneymaker Not to Be an Oscar Nominee

**Circuit Q&A’s are our daily community question, posed to the readers of AwardsCircuit that cover various topics from film and television to general wonderings and for instances**

Later on today, the Producers Guild of America will announce their nominees, marking another major point in the awards season. There are a number of things that go into what gets a PGA nomination, but being a moneymaker is a big-time factor. That inspired us to posit a question to you all. Do you have any favorite films that ended up being a moneymaker but not an Oscar nominee?

Looking back, a noteworthy PGA nominee that made a ton of money but missed with Academy members was “Deadpool,” which we’ve discussed numerous times on the podcast. Just last year “Wonder Woman” suffered the same fate. Remove the Producers from the equation and you still have plenty of moneymakers that ended up snubbed by Oscar. A scroll down the biggest box office hits of all time reveals shutouts for the likes of “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Captain America: Civil War,” “The Dark Knight Rises,” and “Jurassic World.” While being financially successful is no sure sign of popularity, surely some of these rankly highly for you, right?

Today’s PGA announcement could make a death sentence for “First Man,” which was initially seen as a likely Producers Guild nominee, but has seen its chances diminish by not being a moneymaker. Titles hoping for this citation that fit in the criteria include “Black Panther,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” “Mary Poppins Returns,” “A Quiet Place,” and “A Star Is Born.” Would one of these make a favorites list that you came up with? Maybe other 2018 releases like “Aquaman,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Deadpool 2,” “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” or “Venom” are more your style? We certainly don’t lack for 2018 releases that raked in the big bucks. Some might end up Academy Award nominees, but at least a few won’t.

We want to hear from you. Which big moneymaker movies have won your heart while eluding attention from the Academy? We’re all ears!
