Circuit Q&A: Golden Globes This Year – Yay or Nay?

**Circuit Q&A’s are our daily community question, posed to the readers of AwardsCircuit that cover various topics from film and television to general wonderings and for instances**

On Sunday evening, the 77th annual Golden Globe Awards were held. This took place right as the Academy is in the process of filling out their Phase One Oscar ballots. So, not only is this a fun precursor, it’s actually somewhat of an important one this year. Today, we want to look back on what went down this weekend and get your take on it. What are your thoughts on the Golden Globes?

One aspect of the Globes that certainly will generate discussion and/or a reaction is the return of host Ricky Gervais. His prior hosting duties are notoriously divisive, initially being well-liked for their biting takedowns of the celebrities in the room, but since then, they’ve felt more and more mean-spirited. Now, he came back, bringing the same expectations with him. Did you find him funny? Mean? Maybe both?

Maybe it was that a Golden Globe winner struck your fancy? With popular contenders in the race like “The Irishman,” “Joker,” “Marriage Story,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and “Parasite,” the films in the running for awards were pretty top-notch. Perhaps you were thrilled when one of those movies emerged victoriously? On the other hand, maybe you think the Hollywood Foreign Press Association dropped the ball and made the wrong choices?

When he’s not obsessing over new Oscar predictions on a weekly basis, Joey is seeing between 300 and 350 movies a year. He views the best in order to properly analyze the awards race/season each year, but he also watches the worst for reasons he mostly sums up as "so you all don't have to". In his spare time, you can usually find him complaining about the Jets or the Mets. Still, he lives and dies by film. Joey's a voting member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association.

No huge complaints here for me.

Much better than last year.

Overall pretty good. No big complaints. I’m a fan of Ricky Gervais and thought he did an okay job this time, but he came off very bored and grumpy. Usually he seems more gleeful when he says his jokes, but last night made me wonder why he even came back again if he was so disinterested.

I don’t think I could even say that Gervais was mean, he was just sort of boring and not very funny. On the TV side of things I figured Chernobyl and Michelle Williams would win, which was still exciting to see happen, but I lost my mind at Succession winning Best Drama. That is probably the most excited I’ve ever been with any single TV award. Awkwafina winning Comedy Actress was by far the best win of the night, even if I wish that Beanie had won. That Oscar voters had ballots in hand as she won has me pretty… Read more »
