Circuit Q&A – What Next Musical Biopic Do You Want Made?

**Circuit Q&A’s are our daily community question, posed to the readers of AwardsCircuit that cover various topics from film and television to general wonderings and for instances**

Few types of movies are as irresistible to Academy Award voters as musical biopics. Musicians tend to lead lives of excess, inherently full of drama, so film is a perfect medium to translate their stories. Add the public’s fascination with a celebrity’s personal life and the ingredients for audience draw and pundit interest is piqued. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that this tends to come ready-made with a killer soundtrack. As new musical biopic heads to screens next week in the form of “Rocketman,” we want to know who else you think deserves one of their own?

Historically a mainstay with awards, the trend has continued even into contemporary filmmaking. Just last year, “Bohemian Rhapsody” proved that Oscar still loves their musical biopics. No film over-performed at the ceremony more than this look at Freddie Mercury and Queen. This year, “Rocketman” hopes to do the same with Elton John. The early word out of the Cannes Film Festival suggests that it just might, too.

It’s not just folks who make classic rock that is honored with this treatment, either. “Get On Up,” “Notorious,” and “Straight Outta Compton” brought some much-needed diversity to the genre in recent years. Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash received the biopic treatment with “Walk the Line,” but creating variation, in terms of music type and targeted audience, has been beneficial for the industry on the whole.

While it seems like every musician of note has received the biopic iteration of their life, there’s a laundry list of artists still waiting their turn. Janis Joplin has long been rumored to be the next subject for a film of this ilk, but her biopic “Janis” is only in loose pre-production as of now. Someone like Bruce Springsteen has been retrospective of late, with his memoir and Broadway show, making the artist a prime subject for a biopic soon. In addition, Netflix already has “Springsteen on Broadway” to tie into any hypothetical projection. This is just the tip of the iceberg, however. There are scores of other options.

We want you to chime in now. In honor of “Rocketman” hitting theaters next week, which musicians deserve the biopic treatment next? The choice is yours!

Who are some musicians deserving of their own biopics? Let us know in the comments below!

When he’s not obsessing over new Oscar predictions on a weekly basis, Joey is seeing between 300 and 350 movies a year. He views the best in order to properly analyze the awards race/season each year, but he also watches the worst for reasons he mostly sums up as "so you all don't have to". In his spare time, you can usually find him complaining about the Jets or the Mets. Still, he lives and dies by film. Joey's a voting member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association.
