**Circuit Q&A’s are our daily community question, posed to the readers of AwardsCircuit that cover various topics from film and television to general wonderings and for instances**
A film distributor can often hold in its hands whether a project succeeds or fails. How much money is invested, how an awards campaign is or isn’t launched, how the marketing is handled, the list goes on. Along those lines, cinephiles can often become attached to certain places, seeing their tastes reflected in those releases. On the other hand, one can also look at distributors and question their choices, wishing they’d put out other sorts of movies. We’re focusing on the positive today, however. Which film distributors are currently your favorite?
For the longest time, the system was dominated by the American studios. They would finance movies, then release them into theaters. Back in the day, during the “Golden Age” of Hollywood, RKO was a force, along with 20th Century Fox, Columbia, MGM, Paramount, and Warner Bros. Some obviously still remain, though currently we live more in an age where the offshoots of major studios distribute some of the most interesting works. Places like Fox Searchlight obviously spring to mind, along with Focus Features and others.
If you prefer some of the new kids on the block, perhaps you gravitate towards a place like A24? They’ve quickly become the cool place to release work that maybe would fall through the cracks otherwise. What other distributor could give love to such dissimilar work as “Moonlight” and “Tusk?”
We put it to you now. A24, Focus Features, Fox Searchlight, Paramount, Walt Disney Pictures, and so on. What are some of your favorite film distributors? Let us know!
