Circuit Q&A: Which Films Are Appropriate 4/20 Viewing?

420d

**Circuit Q&A’s are our daily community question, posed to the readers of AwardsCircuit that cover various topics from film and television to general wonderings and for instances.**

Today is April 20th, which for some, is apparently a plant-based holiday of some note. If you happen to reside in a state where marijuana is legal, 4/20 can be a big deal. We’re not here to endorse its use, but we are here today to suggest some appropriate viewing options. Perhaps, we’ll even share some films you’d never think to watch on this day, but work well, nevertheless. Of course, we’re also going to want to get your recommendations as well!

Obvious options include the work of directors like Judd Apatow and Kevin Smith (as well as Seth Rogen, who has worked with both). Both filmmakers have often featured stoner characters, with the former also co-writing “Pineapple Express,” in addition to having classic marijuana-related scenes in “The 40 Year Old Virgin” and “Knocked Up.” The latter plays the Silent Bob character in cartoon-like romps “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back” and “Jay and Silent Bob Reboot.” Even more obvious, “Up in Smoke” from comedy duo Cheech and Chong likely gets played more on this day than any other.

Less obvious picks, though still with their 4/20 related charms, include various heady animated programs, including “Big Mouth” and “Rick and Morty.” In addition, Richard Linklater‘s classic “Dazed and Confused” is a movie that has to be on any viewing list for this day. Plus, Paul Thomas Anderson‘s “Inherent Vice” is the rare stoner film to be nominated for an Academy Award, being as Oscar voters don’t generally gravitate towards this sort of material.

The choice is yours, now. On 4/20, is there a movie or movies that you think make for the perfect impromptu film festival? Let us know!

What are your go-to films for 4/20? Discuss in the comments below!

When he’s not obsessing over new Oscar predictions on a weekly basis, Joey is seeing between 300 and 350 movies a year. He views the best in order to properly analyze the awards race/season each year, but he also watches the worst for reasons he mostly sums up as "so you all don't have to". In his spare time, you can usually find him complaining about the Jets or the Mets. Still, he lives and dies by film. Joey's a voting member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association.
