In 2020, we live in a world where franchises and sequels reign supreme. The first major franchise film to be released this year is “Bad Boys for Life,” the third film in the buddy cop action comedy franchise starring Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. Given that the franchise’s last film came out in 2003, it seems like an interesting time to release a third film. Recent long overdue sequels like “Toy Story 4,” “Blade Runner 2049,” “Incredibles 2,” and “Glass” have shown that they are becoming more commonplace in the film industry. However, the more pertinent and specific question we would like to ask is which film series or two deserves a third installment?

Channing Tatum (L) and Jonah Hill (R) in 21 Jump Street

Many would probably point to the recent Jump Street series starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. Both “21 Jump Street” and “22 Jump Street” were crowd-pleasing comedies, and audiences would certainly love a third if it has more hilarious hi-jinks. It would also be very similar to the “Bad Boys” franchise, as buddy cop action comedies that developed into trilogies.

Jim Carrey as Ace Ventura in “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective”

Others would maybe point to the classic Jim Carrey comedies “Ace Ventura” and “The Mask” both as films that deserve third installments, given that “When Nature Calls” and “Son of The Mask” were both immense disappointments upon release. Also, it would be nice to see a comeback for a beloved comic actor like Carrey after years of fading from the spotlight as a movie star.

Ron Burgundy

Others would also probably love to see a third movie in the “Anchorman” series, even if Adam McKay has moved on to more prestige work like “The Big Short” and “Vice.” Given the cult following and hit status of the previous two films, fans would certainly be glad to see a return for Ron Burgundy.
