Circuit Round-Up (Week Ending 11/25)

  • Hello again, fans of The Awards Circuit. We hope you all had an extremely fulfilling (and filling) Thanksgiving Weekend! This week brought us a host of events, perhaps none more involving than the official launch of Academy Idol Season 6. Last Sunday, we asked you to VOTE for your favorite film(s) amongst the competing Original Films fighting for a spot as a Top 13 Finalist. Which five moved on to become the first members of this elite group? Here are your results. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t see your favorite movie among the lineup. Chances are that the AC staff will save some fan favorites to fight another day during next week’s Wild Card Show, which will also include two films chosen by Editor-in-Chief Clayton Davis that weren’t in the original Top 26 lineup. We hope you contributed your suggestions on the matter, as they will greatly aid Clayton in the decision-making process.
  • This week on Power Hour, the staff mostly turned their attention to you guys. We answered a slew of Reader Questions, and one of you even inspired our discussion on Film Criticism. Clayton, Terence, Mark, Joey and I — in roundtable format — each revealed our own methods in critiquing and analyzing films. How do we approach the star system, and are our reviews impacted by the general consensus? Alongside answering those important questions, we didn’t shy away from some State of the Race talk, mostly about Spielberg’s Lincoln and its chances of making Argo’s head spin by positioning itself as a “Best Pic” frontrunner.
  • Which new release became Joey Magidson’s coveted DVD Pick-of-the-Week? It paid to be a beefy, has-been action star this week, as The Expendables 2 found itself to be Joey’s top choice. Joey assures us that there’s a lot of fun to be had here so long as you don’t take things too seriously, so please…have at it! For his vintage selection(s) in honor of the newly released biopic, Fox Searchlight’s Hitchcock, Joey suggests ten of his favorite movies in the genre.
  • Speaking of The Master of Suspense, please do check out Joey’s press junket interviews with the cast and crew of Hitchcock — they’re to die for! Also be sure to take a detailed glance at Nicole Melkonian’s equally detailed compilation of The All-Time Best Hitchcock Films.
  • Anna and I also made sure to keep you updated on two of television’s most popular programs, The Voice and Dancing with the Stars. Check out who made the finale — and who got the heave-ho — on the latter program’s All-Star Edition.
  • Finally, guess which series made its grand return? Our beloved For Your Consideration is now back, right on time since the first precursor award shows are just around the corner! Be sure to check out Clayton’s passionate pitches for The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’s Tom Wilkinson and documentary West of Memphis. Don’t forget to submit your Reader Questions for today’s Power Hour recording. I’m sure you’re still recovering from turkey gorging, but continue to stay with us as we bring you more up-to-date Oscar® news and so much else! Thanks again for your continual loyalty and readership, and please have yourselves another fantastic week!
