Circuit Round-Up (Week Ending 12/30)

  • Happy New Year (almost), readers of The Awards Circuit. In less than twenty-four hours, we’ll all be citizens of the year 2013, so get excited! I don’t need a crystal ball to know how many of you spent the last few days of the year. Based on the popularity of our “reaction” thread for Django Unchained and Les Misérables, I daresay much was being debated, loved and thrown to the wolves (nice knowing you, Tom Hooper!) amongst you moviegoers that saw these two awards juggernauts.
  • There are no words for Joey Magidson’s DVD Pick-of-the-Week. Well, that’s not entirely true. In fact, it’s a bald-faced lie! Yes, Joey went with Bradley Cooper’s little-seen, rarely-liked The Words. So why did Magidson recommend it, admittedly “by default”? This might surprise you, but it’s a foreshadowing (literature term, get it?!) of Cooper’s brilliant turn in Silver Linings Playbook, and it’s always great to see the first markings of a breakout, probable Oscar®-nominated performance, right? For his vintage selection, Joey went with a film I never quite loved but admit to not fully finishing, Gus Van Sant’s Good Will Hunting in honor of the late Promised Land that quietly dropped in theaters this week.
  • Check out what contributing writer Tiff Chai has to say about the current state of the Oscar® race.  Lincoln, Les Misérables and Argo — who is the top dog right now? We might as well be saying: “Lions and Tigers and Bears, oy vey!”
  • Be sure to read the transcribed interviews that Joey Magidson and Tiff Chai conducted, respectively, with Zero Dark Thirty’s Jason Clarke and Chasing Ice director, Jeff Orlowski.
  • We begin wrapping up 2012 with some last-minute updated Oscar® predictions from Editor-in-Chief Clayton Davis, as well as the first two nomination announcements of the annual Davis Awards. Be sure to take a glance at those, and stay with us as our “Best Of” lists roll along these next few weeks. Have a fun and safe New Years Eve, and we cannot thank you all enough for the best year we’ve ever had at The Awards Circuit. Your loyalty knows no end, so THANK YOU! Here’s to a bigger and better 2013!
