Circuit Round-Up (Week Ending 4/21)

  • Hello there, Awards Circuit fans! We started things off very ironically by posting the winners of a recent awards show. An awards show this early in the year, you say? Why, yes, the MTV Movie Awards is the red-headed stepchild of the award shows since it airs after the Oscars®, and certainly after everyone’s mostly forgotten about the nominees that had their theatrical run almost a year ago. I will say, however, quality triumphed for once thanks to major wins for The Weinstein’s Silver Linings Playbook and Disney•Marvel’s The Avengers.

  • On the latest edition of Awards Circuit Power Hour, the staff go through some of the recently published Awards Profiles and discuss further in-depth the likelihood of those films ultimately making friends with AMPAS. Also talked about is the incredible year Hailee Steinfeld has ahead of her. Will multiple projects lead to a possible Academy Award™ nomination by year’s end, a la 2011’s Jessica Chastain? The breakout star from the Coen Bros. True Grit could find 2013 a year to remember.
  • Joey Magidson’s DVD Pick-of-the-Week was no surprise: Quentin Tarantino’s 2nd historical revenge romp, Django Unchained. While this might be my least favorite film in Tarantino’s directorial resume, anytime Tarantino releases a new film it’s cause for celebration.
  • Two big news stories broke this week: The unveiling of the Cannes Film Festival lineup and the new date of the Golden Globes ceremony. Both could affect the Oscar® race in a major way next year, so do read up!
  • As you all know, it’s been a trying week for the nation, and our prayers and condolences go out to the families affected by the Boston Marathon tragedy. I hope we’ve provided some form of healthy escape amidst the hardship. Keep Boston in your thoughts and hopefully this week will shine a little brighter for all. Thanks for reading as always!
