Clint Eastwood Joins the Oscar Race with ‘The Mule’ Receiving a December Release

Clint Eastwood and Bradley Cooper

Clint Eastwood continues to be one with a penchant for the dramatic. The actor and director continues to push through films quickly in order to release them in time for Oscar qualification. You might think this is a one-off, but an Eastwood late-breaking film sequence might be a sign that we truly made it to awards season at this point. The latest film to join the late-breaking group will be “The Mule,” which will now release on December 14th of this year.

Gran Torino Eastwood

“The Mule” will showcase Eastwood as an actor for the first time since 2012. As Earl Stone, he will play a horticulturalist and drug mule for the Mexican Cartels. Eastwood also directs the film, which features many strong actors. This includes Bradley CooperMichael Peña, Lawrence FishburneTaissa Farmiga, and Diane Wiest. The role feels juicy, but the film could also be a commercial play for Warner Brothers. They will have their hands full with Cooper’s own film, “A Star is Born,” heavily considered a frontrunner for Best Picture. Even so, the two actors-turned-directors are intriguing actors to push this film. The film quickly got pushed out, so there is probably something there as far as awards go.

Trouble with the Curve EastwoodThe 88-year-old actor supposedly retired with “Trouble with the Curve” from 2012. Even before that role, Eastwood’s acting appearances in the 2000s were far down as he embraced directing. Since 2000, he acted in five films. Eastwood received a nomination for Best Actor for “Million Dollar Baby” and contended for the Oscar for “Gran Torino” in 2008. This does bode well for “The Mule” as the respected performer never received a Best Actor prize for his work. Like Robert Redford, Eastwood won his 4-Oscars for directing and producing. However, he can play the overdue card as an iconic actor. With Eastwood back in the fray, expect waves in the Oscar race.
