Damien Chazelle’s ‘The Eddy’ for Netflix Casts Joanna Kulig

Joanna Kulig is the newest star to be cast in Damien Chazelle‘s Netflix project “The Eddy.” Kulig, who just recently starred in Pawel Pawlikowski’s Oscar-nominated Polish period drama “Cold War,” will be starring alongside the recently cast André Holland.

As reported on Variety:

The Paris-set Netflix show will revolve around a club, its owner, the house band, and the chaotic city that surrounds them. The series is expected to start shooting on location in Paris later this year.

Kulig will play Maja, a singer who is resisting committing to her on-again-off-again partner, Elliot (Andre Holland), but her other options don’t look so great, either. Maja, who has a drinking problem, is the absolute center of attention when she sings, but otherwise, she’s adrift, at a crossroads where every direction looks like a dead end.

Kulig is no stranger to melodic film settings. In “Cold War” she starred as a singer who falls into a bittersweet and fleeting relationship with a music director (Thomasz Kot). The film even features her singing her own songs. So there’s not much doubt about what she can bring to a role in a film centered around a jazzy landscape, a la the Chazelle-directed “La La Land.”

Kulig currently stars in a supporting role on Amazon Studios’ series “Hanna.” She just finished wrapping up on Renata Gabryjelska’s Poland-set thriller “Safe Inside.”

Damien Chazelle’s “The Eddy” will begin filming on location in Paris, France this year. Chazelle is executive producing as well as directing the first two episodes. André Holland is also serving as an executive producer. The series marks Chazelle’s first ever television endeavor as he dips into this long-form storytelling. The eight-episode series is written by Jack Thorne, who helped write the screenplay for 2017’s “Wonder.”

“The Eddy” is being produced by Atlantique Productions and Fifty Fathoms Production.
